Village Jazz Alive
Honoring the great Odetta with the Village Music Legends Award
Odetta is one of the world’s most revered folksingers. An inspiring activist during the fight against segregation, she was anointed the ‘Queen of American folk music’ by Martin Luther King, Jr. In the melting pot of the Village, Odetta raised her powerful voice against social injustices in our society. The New York Times called her the ‘goddess of folk and blues.’ Her unforgettable music blends blues, gospel and folk. Harry Belafonte once said that "...Few possess the fine understanding of a song's meaning... Odetta transforms it from a melody into a dramatic experience."
