The Greenwich Village-Chelsea Chamber of Commerce Presents Village Jazz Alive Honoring the great Odetta with the Village Music Legends Award Odetta is one of the world’s most revered folksingers. An inspiring activist during the fight against segregation, she was anointed the ‘Queen of American folk music’ by Martin Luther King, Jr. In the melting pot of the Village, Odetta raised her powerful voice against social injustices in our society. The New York Times called her the ‘goddess of folk and blues.’ Her unforgettable music blends blues, gospel and folk. Harry Belafonte once said that "...Few possess the fine understanding of a song's meaning... Odetta transforms it from a melody into a dramatic experience." FEATURING Virginia Mayhew An active participant in the New York jazz scene, Virginia Mayhew has appeared in most of the city’s jazz venues and has worked with such renowned artists as Kenny Barron, Chico O’Farrell, Norman Simmons, and many others. She started playing the clarinet when she was 10 and the saxaphone at 16. She has been a jazz ambassador for the State Department and has performed all over the world. She is known for her superb technique and interesting arrangements. She has taught the jazz workshop at the Greenwich House Music School. Carla Cook Part of a new generation of jazz vocalists who draw on an eclectic genre for material, Carla Cook infuses her performances with excitement and great jazz skill. Her first album, All About Love, scored a Grammy nomination for ‘Best Jazz Vocal Performance,” and she has performed internationally to great acclaim. She has also won recognition as a rising star in the United States and around the world.
