  1. I won't hesitate to say that it will probably be the best $96 you ever spend in your life in terms of musical enjoyment.

    Congrats !

Thanks, Sidewinder. Now I'm anticipating the delivery even more.

(I should mention, though, that I once found a used copy of Dexter Gordon's complete 60's blue note sessions (also 6 discs) for $23.99. That's easily the best money I've ever spent on CDs and it's going to be hard to beat.)

  2. Thanks for the info, everyone. I have several Hank Mobley's blue note CDs, but I think most of what I own were recorded in the 60s. Since I don't have any of the sessions that are included in the 50s set, $96 was an excellent price. I placed my order and I'm looking forward to it.

  3. I don't think this date will be reissued on CD any time soon, considering the declining CD sales and the state of EMI.

Agreed. If it's not out now, it will likely never be released. That's such a shame, too. Not that I care about the CD media itself, but I do have a preference for lossless 16/44 (or better - I guess) digital. I don't care for lossy compression at any bitrate, or even vinyl for that matter. I don't want to start a great debate on the subject, though. If this session is ever released in any digital form, I'd likely buy it.

On the other hand, I think I saw the mosaic set sell for under $60 on ebay recently, but I think that was just a very lucky fluke for someone.

  4. Does anyone know if this Jackie Mclean session was ever released on CD outside of the Mosaic set?

    High Frequency

    Combined Effort

    Moonscape

    Jossa Bossa

    The Bull Frog

I've never heard any of these tunes, but I'd love to. Since I already own everything else that's on the mosaic set, though, it would sure be a shame to spend a couple hundred dollars for 5 songs.

Googling didn't produce any results but I'd like to know if anyone knows of some long out of print release or perhaps one that was only available outside of the US.

  5. This is my first post here...

I'd like to pick up Rollins' "Tenor Madness" album on CD (I already have the title number as part of Coltrane's 'Side Steps' box, but I'd like the rest of non Coltrane cuts as well). Does anyone have any opinions on what you think the definitive CD version is? At the very least, I know there's an OJC, a K2, a SACD, an RVG and probably others. Does anyone know which master was used for the redbook layer on the SACD?

The reason I'm asking is because other albums I own from this era have had some questionable digital transfers. "Saxophone Colossus," for example, has noticable droupouts on the OJC and RVG versions, while the K2 CD which I have doesn't contain any significant audible artifacts.

I failed to mention that I'm not interested in spending hundreds of dollars for a DCC version, but other than that I'd appreciate any insight anyone can offer on all of the other available versions of Tenor Madness. Thanks.
