  1. Sounds right up my alley. Will definitely be checking this out.

Athens-born, Boston-based pianist Pandelis Karayorgis’ Fender-Rhodes-centered trio, with bassist Nate McBride and drummer Curt Newton, includes all of Hasaan’s tunes in its repertoire. “Off My Back Jack” appears on their hatOLOGY release “Betwixt.”

  2. Like CJ Shearn, I got mine straight from ECM via their special deal for journalists. Only had 4 of these on vinyl and one on CD, so didn’t have to think twice. Listening to Tribute to Lester right now, which I missed at the time, and it is inspired! And the booklet is amazing, including what appear to be all of the original artwork and liner notes plus much more. This will keep me busy for quite some time and will surely see me digging into their earlier work again. (My box # is 1563/6000.)

  3. Just re-watched season 3 of Breaking Bad on disc in anticipation of season 4 starting soon. I love this show.

Great show, thanks for the heads up on the new season. I didn't know it was due to start.

Thanks. The 4th season is supposed to start on July 17th if I recall correctly.

No Mad Men this summer, so I started watching Breaking Bad. Amazingly great show! Talk about noir! Looks like my summer is saved.

  6. So glad this is coming out on CD! A few years ago, when I was writing an article about Hemphill's music, I had a hard time finding a copy of "Dogon A.D." Thankfully, a kind organissimo forums member came to my rescue!

    Here's the article: http://www.boston.com/news/globe/living/articles/2007/10/14/celebrating_his_joy_of_the_sax/

Once again, let me remind you that the headlines of articles are written by the copy editors, not the writers.

  7. I've again been reading, in a hit-and-miss-manner, the two volume book, The Annotated Sherlock Holmes by William S. Baring-Gould, which I vastly prefer to the American annotated version done by Leslie S. Klinger that came out awhile back. I just think the one by Baring-Gould has a much better feel to it, the "tone" is more alive and correct. The Klinger version tries to be way too hip for my taste. When I first read it, there was a footnote that referenced the Seinfeld Show, and I hated that. Maybe I'm just too use to Baring-Gould, or too old fashioned, but give me British restraint and understatement anytime. This is a Desert Island book for me.

Just picked this up at my local thrift store. I'm thrilled, because I recall really wanting this when it first hit the bookshops in the 1970s and I was a boy of little means. I'm looking forward to revisiting the Holmes canon...

I'm not familiar with the book, but the idea of finding a reference to Seinfeld in a Sherlock Holmes book annoys the heck out of me.

    Hear hear!

  8. Esquivel and his Orchestra - To Live Again

Checking out my recent purchase: $1.99 at my local thrift store...

Lucky Thompson - Goodbye Yesterday (Groove Merchant)

Love Lucky! How is this one?

with the usual suspects: Teddy Charles, Phil Woods, Bob Brookmeyer, Zoot Sims, Mose Allison, Dave McKenna, Jimmy Raney, Teo Macero, etc...

My favorite Broadway musical ever. How is this tribute?

  9. My favorite is her 1962 "Life Story," subtitled "The Story of Life on Our Earth from its Beginning Up to Now," in which the saga of our planet is presented as a sort of play, with each amazing illustration depicted within a proscenium arch. It took her eight years, she claimed, to research this amazing book, which I am very happy to see is still in print.

That's pretty obscure. But definitely worth checking out. Thanks. My son is starting to find science interesting (thank you TMBG!) so I will check this out and probably order it. I am particularly intrigued that the one in print (a Nov. 2009 edition!) is an updated edition. What could that possibly mean, I ask myself. I will try to find out who did this updating before I decide which edition to get.

All my sources say she died in 1968. She was born in 1909, so this is her centennial year! I'm not familiar with the updated edition, though I'm curious to check it out. I own a copy of the original 1962 hardcover.

  10. "The Little House" by Virginia Lee Burton. Probably well-known at one time, but rather obscure now.

She was the best. Also the writer/illustrator of "Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel," and "Katy and the Big Snow," both of which, like "The Little House," won the Caldecott Medal.
