Has anyone read this book who can speak to the emphasis on "black genius" and "black music"? I'm sure there is much great content, but I can't bring myself to buy the book because ascribing Bud's genius or music to a single racial identity turns me off. I think it does a disservice to the universal themes of Bud's talent and music. Guthrie Ramsey's previous book, Race Music, seems to set the tone. I'm sure he is getting grants for this type of work but one of the things I think we all love about great music is its ability to transcend color, creed, fads and time. What is the goal of academics like Ramsey who lay racial claim to a certain genre or group of genres that were clearly influenced by other races. Bud was profoundly influenced by latin music and other genres. I just don't see what can be gained in 20XX by calling this black music. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0520243919

I recently picked up Bluesette and How My Heart Sings on SHM-SACD. Several other Savoys and Riversides are available. Would be nice to have Blue Notes.

I got to meet him at Yoshi's a couple years ago. He played a great set. KB is a very humble guy. Amazing to think he played alongside Trane and most other notable musicians.

Fascinating theory about Grachan. A few years ago, I shared a cab with Grachan and Joe Chambers (this does not happen every day!). Grachan said that Wayne told him that after 'Fransenstein' came out, it totally 'freed' Wayne up - the implication as I understood it was that Wayne found new inspiration for his own writing in the freedom of Grachan's writing - I assume he heard other compositions as well. Something to really think about.
An interesting story, but clearly Wayne can find things to free him up almost anywhere he looks.

Just sayin' - different players might make this band different, but different would not necessarily be better. Sometimes "it is what it is" is more valuable than "it's not what it should be", especially if "it is what it is" is what everybody involved collectively wants/needs it to be.
Yeah, that post really bugged me. It was like a kid trying to trade baseball cards to get his dream team. Unless you want to be a producer or a bandleader and handpick a lineup for a recording or a working group, respectively, you really have no business second-guessing why a group of musicians are playing together--especially a group of this caliber. It's fine if you don't like what they play, but I found the "analysis" of a better group quite bizarre. Shorter knows who he wants in his band and how he wants the music to sound. Take it or leave it. I'll take it because it's a language that speaks to me in a new way.

How likely are these Analogue Productions SACDs to go out of print soon? I own a couple, but would like to buy a few more of the Blue Note, Impulse! and Verve titles.

For those of us in California it's actually cheaper to order from Amazon, Acoustic Sounds or Music Direct because of the taxes that ImportCDs now charges.

A lot of APO's early SACDs, such as Waltz for Debby, are still available. So my guess would be these will remain in stock for many more years. That said, when SACDs go OOP, the prices are ridiculous. So it may be best to just cave and buy them now.

The CD version is indead a lot cheaper. Can't vouch for its sound quality.
I just bought the John Coltrane album "Coltran" from the same series and it is indeed an excellent pressing. The Flannigan album is definitely on my short list of others to get in that series.
I'm glad that it's cut at 33 1/3 instead of 45 rpm too.
Yes, Coltrane is my favorite Trane album so I was thrilled with this SACD (I haven't been getting the vinyl). There is now a Prestige and Verve series coming from APO. The Prestige All Stars SACD is another gem.

The APO reissue of Overseas is amazing. Elvin Jones sounds like he's in the room and the piano has a wonderful midrange tone with a hint of stringed percussive quality that so often is missing on CD or lossy MP3. A must-have.

Exactly. Blu-rays are primarily for movies. SACDs are primarily for music.

No, but it would be better to use regular analog (RCA) cables, as long as your preamp/receiver doesn't redigitize them.

Well, this is not an ideal means of SACD playback. There is no way to bitstream DSD over optical output. Meaning your Sony is converting it to PCM and the Adcom is then converting it to analog. What "flavor" of PCM you are outputting, I am not sure. You should be able to determine it using your owners manual--possibly 24/192, which could account for your preference of SACDs over CDs.

Of course you can play SACDs with no HDMI connection--that is totally obvious. Kevin's point is that to properly bitstream DSD over HDMI, you need a decoder downstream that can accept a DSD signal and convert to analog.

Yes, I think Onkyo has suitable models, but I haven't stayed current on their offerings. I use the Integra 9.8 which is no longer in production, but I know Integra is affiliated with Onkyo.

Getting back to the music, this description of the quartet resonates with me:
This is uncompromising stuff that requires a lot of work from the listener. At times it's like eavesdropping on an esoteric joke shared by four geniuses, conducted in a dialect you don't quite understand. But watching and, more to the point, hearing outstanding musicians who know how to listen, respond and improvise meaningfully with each other is always an exhilarating experience.
