in my free jazz I don't use heads at the beginning and end. I like to explore in a formless fashion taking the line anywhere I want it to go. It could be compared to many forms in nature like fish swimming in a school. They all flow together knowing instinctively when to turn directions. I have always wanted to be in a band where all the musicians can improvise freely together as one school with no need for chord changes, just music. If you think like an artist, the musical lines can be seen to make shapes that can fit with other lines to make an abstract picture.
