When you consider what the "collective public" generally holds in high esteem, not in the slightest.

A mindful consideration of "all-time" with space to discuss and engage?  That has potential, and I'd suggest a deep perusal of this, even though its limited in scope:

Haha, good point. By "collective public" in this case, I was referring to jazz fans. I would assume people who aren't into jazz aren't spending any time voting on this list. I'll check out some of the albums from that blog. Thanks!

Of course lists are always subjective but they could still be inspiring. The unfortunate thing with this one is the ability to vote which leads to a top 100 of the usual suspects.

Wouldn't you rather know what the collective public thinks of albums than read one person's opinion?

Just wondering - is the list going to drive your future purchases in any way, or does that list exist separate from this one?

Personal opinions aside, no real wrong answers here.

Sure. I've tried to listen to most of the albums on the list, and found quite a few that I enjoyed and some that I purchased.

Not sure what that list is about ... if you want people to vote, why not compile a list of (fasten yer seatbelts!) all jazz albums (and compilations if you want to include jazz before 1950 as well) ever released? Obviously no one would go through the pains and vote then, but like this it suggests a kind of poll/majority thing, but the basis for it is totally botched.

Also, several albums are listed twice it seems (or the list keeps morphing while you add votes)?

    A) I don't know of any way to even discover every jazz album ever made, nor do I have time to create that list. Help yourself if you want to do that.
    B) The albums that you see listed twice are a glitch that happens occasionally while adding votes. It's very annoying. As far as I know, no albums are actually on there twice.

No Ayler, M. Brown, Shepp, Roach on that list lends credence to subjectivity.

There are 5 Max Roach albums on the list. 1 Ayler and 1 Shepp.

If you’re trying to establish a list of the best or perhaps essential jazz albums, that just strikes me as unusual.

Well, unless a bunch of people vote for it (which seems unlikely), it will remain in relative obscurity toward the bottom of the list.

    No Bill Barron?

I'm not familiar with him. Any particular albums you'd recommend?

I just looked at this thread.  Shocked to see how many of my favorites are on the original list.  (Also a couple of selections I just never liked.)  I'd agree with all  who suggested that were some compilations of 78s  that made their mark when they were first issued  and mainly I'd add some Gil Evans. I also must admit that many of my choices are because they were the first Lps I bought of particular musicians.  Hence, for example, I'd take Mingus Ah Um over The Black Saint or Tijuana Moods.

    Glad you enjoyed the list.

Going back to an earlier point made by Jim, for $5 how can you go wrong? On the YouTube thing, yeah, that’s recent, and back in the 60s, 70s, etc., you’d just have to purchase things on faith.

If I spend $5 and don't like it, that's $5 lost that could have gone toward a record I already know I want. I've got hundreds (thousands, maybe even) of albums on my wish list already.

Did you look it up on YouTube?

Yeah, can't find it anywhere on YouTube or Spotify. Maybe I'll just ask them to throw it on at the record store next time I'm there. Sounds like it'll be worth it.

Just sayin’, you got a five buck record of Jimmy Forrest and Shirley Scott in a trio, recorded live, and the first (only?) thing that keeps the record on the shelf was the recording date, no, that is not a good decision in any way. That’s simply not knowing enough about anything other than using a callender for a record player.

The first thing that's keeping the record on the shelf is that I've never heard it. I rarely buy records I haven't heard. I've been burned one too many times doing that.

The second factor is that the date scares me. I have heard very few jazz albums from the 70s that I enjoyed enough to purchase them.

I only looked at the top 100. I just looked at the next 100. I find it even stranger that Bird’s Verve recordings are not in that group, unless I missed it.

At any rate, I agree with Chuck. Make your own list, although the list is a useful guide.

The albums are in order based on user votes. So until people vote for Jimmy Smith, Charlie Parker, etc., they will be lower on the list. There should be a search option on there to search for certain artists if you don't want to scroll through the whole list.

And I did make this list.

It's straight-ahead organ trio jazz made in the 1970s. I think it's better than his Prestige sides because he had advanced as a player and wasn't bashful about it. It's an excellent record. If it's still there, run back and get it before somebody else does.

Some friendly advice - dates are chronological markers, not stylistic imperatives. Don't get trapped by conflating recording dates with musical expectations, there's plenty of bullshit to be had in all decades and with all production trappings or lack thereof.

I just know that a lot of artists that I liked in the 50s-60s (Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, etc.) completely changed styles in the 70s. Everybody got into the fusion stuff. For the most part, I was not a fan of it at all.

Dude, Forrest for a fin is a no-brainer. Trust me on this one.

Is it anything like his other albums (Forrest Fire, Out of the Forrest, etc.)? Or is it more 70s-sounding? I am not a fan of most 70s jazz.

Generally, I agree with Georghe.  You could do worse than this list and for an incipient fan, it’s a good guide to what to listen to. I thought Leapin and Loping and Cornbread were unusual additions, not that they’re fine albums.  I would have thought the list included a Jimmy Smith album or some of Bird’s Verve recordings.

There are 3 Jimmy Smith albums on there (Midnight Special, Back at the Chicken Shack, Dynamic Duo w/ Wes Montgomery). Also a couple Charlie Parker Verve albums (S/T and Complete Verve Recordings). You gotta dig through the whole list.

Which begs the question, when DID they hold back? I mean, serious. When? Because those tapes are yet to be released.

Whether Ballads was a “commercial concession” is a debate I’ll stay out of, but that album is arguably one of the best the Classic Quartet ever recorded. Bar none.

Now, I will humbly concede that if you hit me up for a spur of the moment “top five Coltrane Quartet albums” Ballads likely wouldn’t be mentioned. But it damned sure SHOULD be! It’s funny. They didn’t cut loose on that session, nor did they make any of those tunes their own. But somehow they made them “perfect”. Just. Fucking. Perfect.

Along with Crescent (due to it being overshadowed by A Love Supreme in the ‘64 canon), Ballads is THE most overlooked and underappreciated albums that band ever recorded, IMO.

I agree. Ballads is amazing. Just a beautiful album.

I'm just listening to Jimmy Forrest's 'Heart of the Forrest'; a trio session on Palo Alto, with Shirley and the one and only Randy Marsh - NO BASS PLAYER!

    A damn fine album!

Do you know of anywhere I can listen to this online? I saw it at a record store the other day for $5 and almost picked it up, but I haven't heard any of it. I couldn't find anything on Spotify or YouTube.

    This album is dope.
