Slope, Brooklyn.
Tuition: $100 per course (4 classes per course)
Students can sign up for up to 4 courses
PRACTICING THE PIANO (Monday – Ethan Iverson)
Pianists should practice every day, right? Ethan Iverson shares what he does. Improvising
will be the main topic, but students will also be asked to play J. S. Bach's 2-part invention
in F major. Not for beginning pianists.
COMPOSITION (Tuesday – James Carney)
This course will cover key aspects of composition, including through-composed and
improvisational forms, voice leading, vertical and linear harmony, rhythm & rhythmic
counterpoint, melody development, basic arranging and the inclusion of non-jazz genres.
Over the 4 classes, students will compose and refine a short work, and discover various
ways to modify and sculpt it to most faithfully represent their individual compositional
"voice."
FREE IMPROVISATION (Wednesday – J. Granelli)
Can you learn to play “free”? Is there anything to really learn? “Free” from what? In this
class the art of open improvisation will be examined by exploring helpful concepts,
learning how to practice free music in our every day lives and how improvisation and
composition are one in the same. Most importantly, students will learn by playing.
IMPROVISATION FOR CLASSICAL PLAYERS (Wednesday – Ralph Alessi) *
Improvisation for Classical Players is perfectly designed for Classical players who have
always wanted to improvise but never have as well as for the ones that have been
improvising and want to go deeper. This is not a jazz improvising class although aspects of
that world will be introduced as well.
M-BASE RHYTHM NATION (Thursday – Andy Milne)
The goal is to improvise more comfortably within structures often
referred to as “odd time signatures”. Techniques and concepts such as oral dictation,
singing, clapping and body awareness will be used to develop the ability to learn and
internalize compositions with unorthodox rhythmic structures. Its recommended students
bring a recording device of some kind.
