I've got a copy of the complete 1953 Salle Pleyel concert on the  way and am looking for an inexpensive copy of the Blue Star recordings.

The Salle Pleyel gig is something I knew from it being parted out on Roulette in the 70s, but hearing it complete is a trip. That group was leaning in to backbeat (implied and literal) music in a way that anticipates the Messengers by a few years! The drummer Al Jones is bringing it! And Wade Legge!

That 1953 concert recording is one of my favorite Dizzy recordings. His trumpet playing is unreal on that one.

In partnership with UNT Jazz Community Events, Steve's Wine Bar Presents

    The Billy Harper Quintet

In 1964, Harper was the first Black student accepted into the prestigious One O’Clock Lab Band. Billy Harper’s experience during integration paved a pathway for Black students at UNT, which is now a Minority-Serving Institution.

Billy has performed with the likes of Gil Evans, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Lee Morgan, The Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra and many others solidifying him as the Jazz great he is today. “Billy is a griot, a storyteller,” said T.K. Blue, the saxophonist and flutist who performed with Harper for 30 years in bands led by the pianist Randy Weston. “I can hear the history of where he comes from in that music. It’s regal. I hear Africa. I hear Texas. I hear the blues.”, “...At 82, he is still a force in the community and turns heads with his sound and compositions.” The New York Times

  3. Last night, at the Memorial High School Auditorium in Frisco, a Jugalbandi featuring Hindustani Flute By Praveen Godkindi and Carnatic Violin By Ambi Subramanian - son of L Subramanian, with three percussionists -Yashwant Vaishnav on Tabla, Sowmi Narayanan on Ghatam, and Akshay Anthapadmanabhan on Mridamgam.

An excellent concert of Indian classical music, the violinist was exceptional.

  4. Friday:

Rex Gregory Quartet with Amina Figarova at the New Orleans Jazz Museum.

Stephen Walker's Swingin' in New Orleans at the Royal Frenchman Hotel.

Jason Marsalis Trio Excursions with Ricardo Pascal (saxophones) at Snug Harbor.

    Saturday:

Herlin Riley Quartet at Snug Harbor (2 sets). Absolutely amazing.

    Sunday:

Leroy Jones and the Preservation All Stars, Preservation Hall.

  5. I saw him only once, two years ago at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. It was basically a straight ahead jazz set, with an alto/trombone frontline and Geoff Keezer on keyboards.

Favorite solo by David Sanborn for me is on Billy Harper's Priestess, on the Gil Evans album of the same name.
