blue-note-ojc Posted August 29, 2004 Report Posted August 29, 2004 I was really excited when this DVD was to come out. I thought that 1985 reunion concert was one of the great moments in jazz history, not so much for the music, but for the reunion celebration aspect of it with the former Blue Note recording stars and having Alfred Lion, Rudy Van Gelder, and Reid Miles there as guests of honor. Alfred, and maybe all three for all I know, received a standing ovation. I was really looking forward to seeing that on the DVD. So, I was pretty disappointed when I got the DVD last year and none of that sort of thing was there. I just bought Richard Cook's book BLUE NOTE RECORDS now that it has been remaindered. I have reached that part of the book and it brought that back to mind again. Cook wrote, "The music itself, as with most stage-managed great occasions, only intermittently caught fire. But the underlying theme was a homage to Alfred Lion, and in that respect the concert was a triumph. ... A wave of emotion swept over the concert as Alfred, frail but beaming, was given an ovation". I wonder if anyone here was at that concert and could describe the parts involving Alfred Lion, Rudy Van Gelder and Reid Miles. Tom Quote
