Jim Dye Posted September 25, 2004 Report Posted September 25, 2004 September 25, 2004 Flint, Mich., Mayor Loosens Reading Ban By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Filed at 12:10 a.m. ET FLINT, Mich. (AP) -- Mayor Don Williamson on Friday said he will allow newspapers in City Hall -- a slight loosening of his ban on city employees reading anything at work that's not related to their jobs. The announcement came after police temporarily detained a newspaper carrier for trying to deliver subscriptions to City Hall. Williamson issued an executive order in July that prohibits city workers from reading or having non-work-related reading material on city property during their work hours. On Friday, the mayor's office said the city will allow ``delivery of newspapers by authorized persons'' for use during breaks and lunch. ``The goal remains for taxpayers of the City of Flint to be certain that tax dollars are being spent in a wise manner. We must continue to strive to increase the productivity of city employees to deliver the level of service that our citizens expect and deserve,'' Williamson said in a statement. The American Civil Liberties Union said it was looking into complaints about the executive order. ``People have a right to read,'' said Wendy Wagenheim, a spokeswoman for the ACLU of Michigan. Quote
Spontooneous Posted September 25, 2004 Report Posted September 25, 2004 So the paper printed something that pissed off the mayor, and he retaliated? Quote
