Guest akanalog Posted October 23, 2004 Report Posted October 23, 2004 dustygroove has this benny bailey album called "islands" on enja from 1976. sounds intriguing. eberhard weber and sigi schwab are onboard which makes me think this album might have some sort of fusion-ey stuff going on-well not fusion-ey, but not straight traditional type stuff. maybe some spacier, deeper and more atmospheric stuff going on? anyone know? Spontooneous Posted October 24, 2004 Report Posted October 24, 2004 I just LOVE Benny Bailey, but this is my least favorite album of his, sad to say. Sounds like an ersatz ECM album. Benny doesn't seem too excited about the material. An interesting '70s relic, but just a relic for me. Maybe someday I'll like it better, but not today. Get "Grand Slam" on Storyville instead. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted October 25, 2004 Report Posted October 25, 2004 well, what about for people like me who do not really care for the straight stuff and like something a little more fusion-ey or electric. would this album interest me? is it just an album of bad straight jazz played with electric instruments? Spontooneous Posted October 25, 2004 Report Posted October 25, 2004 OK, I'll try again. The album tries to be ECM-spacey but just sounds flat to me. It's like a substandard Eberhard Weber album with Bailey uncomfortably along for the ride -- as a follower, not as leader. (On LP, it even tried to look like an ECM. The CD cover is completely different.) Quote
