neveronfriday Posted December 12, 2004 Report Posted December 12, 2004 Hi everyone, I was just wondering when the "Open House All Star Sessions: Chicago, Hollywood & New York" sold by Avid took place. The musicians were, as far as I could find out, Coleman Hawkins, Benny Carter, Harry James, Johah Jones, Charlie Christian, and Teddy Bunn. Anyone else? Cheers! Quote
neveronfriday Posted December 12, 2004 Author Report Posted December 12, 2004 Forget it. I ordered the two double CD sets. I guess I'll find out what I wanted to know soon ... Cheers! Quote
Steve Gray Posted December 12, 2004 Report Posted December 12, 2004 These are the classic Victor sessions recorded between 1937 and 1940. There are many sessions with greatly differing personnels ove the 4 year period. Classic stuff. Quote
neveronfriday Posted December 12, 2004 Author Report Posted December 12, 2004 (edited) Thanks Steve. And re the "jazz-aholic" thread elsewhere: As it turns out, I have most of these sessions already on two old Jazz Tribune twofers (BMG France/RCA '93/'94). Typical. Cheers! Don't quite get why they call this the Open House All Star Sessions though...just cuz they are all, all stars??? Why open house??? I mention this once or twice a year for no good reason except the tune Gin for Christmas is one of my all time favorites! If it is on the new set, or on you old French black and whites, turn it up to 11! Quote
Christiern Posted December 14, 2004 Report Posted December 14, 2004 I think the title's origin is elementary: If ever there was a series of all-star sessions, Hamp's Victors was it, and one of the tunes (12/20/40) was "Open House." Quote

Great Ziggy stuff. There are just great numbers throughout those twofers. I just don't get that I didn't make the connection between these and the Avid discs. Maybe I was hoping that it was some 30's, 40's and 50's Hampton that I didn't have. I think I should perhaps learn a bit more about these sessions instead of just listening to them. Not bloody likely though in the near future. Cheers! Quote
