Peter Posted December 19, 2004 Author Report Posted December 19, 2004 Well I almost didn't go. It's a pain in the ass driving down to Chicago. But Henry Threadgill is special and his appearances in this part of the country are rare. My first time at the Hot House. Probably the nicest "jazz" club I've been in. Roomy, but intimate. The band was in top form. All excellent musicians and improvisers. The sound was great. A very tight, well rehearsed ensemble. They all seem to be doing something different but it all fits together just perfect. Played 2 45 minutes sets. The music had my foot tapping all night, though they certainly don't swing in a conventional sense. Very rhythmic, angular music. Tuba, cello, drums and oud formed a curious but very compelling rhythm section. A very enthusiastic and appreciative audience. The house was maybe 75% of capacity. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Threadgill is a truly unique talent. A genius in my view. Quote
