Just curious, especially given some of the rabid collecters we have here, if anyone else is a member of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC). It's mostly an organization for institutions (libraries, archives, etc) but there is certainly no shortage individual members. There are also quite a few engineers and preservation specialists.

I bring this up partialy because the annual convention is in Austin this March--I want to know who to look out for--and also because the ARSC listserv is a very useful tool regarding degradation and preservation issues; something that comes up quite often in the "Audio Talk" section here. They also have a link to the listserv archive, which I consult on a regular basis.

Yes, member. Never attended any conferences - can't get work to let me go to IAJE when it's in NYC and various music education things AND something only marginally related to my "real" job.

Some good articles in the Journal over the years, but still a bit biased against jazz in terms of discography (see their articles and panel discussions on "Formulating Guidelines"). Vincent Pelote, who is on the ARSC board, asked for some help improving this area and I look forward to discussing things.

I am very seldom interested their journal articles. Too much emphasis on "classical" and cylinder-era recordings. Entirely too little information concerning preservation issues which, as any member of the listserv will tell you, accounts for at least half of the posts. I have expressed my distaste for this tendency a number of times on the list.

No way to become a member of ARSC, but maybe we can put qouestion in another way:

Any 78rpm collector, researcher, transfering engeneer, or sound preservation freak out here?

I know that Hans (Durium) is quite sucesfull in this, and I, myself am very interested in this exciting activity here in my country (almost unknown in Serbia, unfortunatelly, especially speaking of protection of national cultural heritage).

Anyone can be a member of ARSC. link

As for your second question: I am a librarian at Stanford whose specific purpose is to handle and preserve audio holdings including, among other things, the Radio Free Eurpoe collection. God knows I don't know everything but I do know where to look and who to ask for information regarding structural degradation issues, applying solvents for cleaning, and digitization.

Again, the ARSC listserv is a valuable resource for this kind of information.
