A record label has hired a private detective to trace jazz singer Madeleine Peyroux, whose album has been steadily climbing the UK charts.

The US singer has failed to turn up for any promotional work, according to Universal Classics.

It said this was not the first time she had vanished, spending seven years busking in Paris after the release of her debut album.

Record bosses said she was "proving impossible to track down".

Peyroux's voice has been compared to Billie Holiday, with the potential to become one of the biggest-selling artists of the year.

She released her debut album, Dreamland, in 1996 to rave reviews but soon ducked out of the public eye to spend her time busking on the streets of Paris.

On her return to the music scene she signed to independent label Rounder Records, which now has a licensing deal with Universal.

A Universal spokeswoman said: "She should be overjoyed with the album's chart position, but she has now returned to America and is proving impossible to track down.

"Anxious record company bosses and her management company have been trying to contact her for nearly a week to no avail. She has simply disappeared."

The company said it had gone "to great lengths to protect Madeleine from burn-out through too much promotional work".

"But it would seem that despite these efforts Ms Peyroux has had enough," said the spokeswoman.

"She is that rare thing, an artist more interested in her music than in the glitz and glamour of showbusiness."

She's done this before. Want to be out of the music 'business' for a while. I can understand that.

Another case of 'Just Leave Me Alone'. She'll be back at the concerts she has on her schedule.

What the heck; someone who likes to play and sing but doesn't want to deal with the bullshit.  Hard to argue with that...

She's rumored to be out on the West Coast--'fess up, Mr. Moose! Lest we put the Ghost of Sam Spade on the case.

Jazz singer Peyroux is found in New York

Jazz singer Madeline Peyroux has been found after being declared missing by her record label, who hired a private detective to search for her.

According to the BBC, Bill Holland, of Universal Classics and Jazz, confirmed that they had "tracked her down very quickly. Much to our embarrassment she was with her manager in New York."

Holland also said that the singer wouldn't come back and that she wanted to be left alone.

Peyroux's manager claimed that she did not want to partake in any more promotions for her latest album 'Careless Love'.

According to the report, Peyroux's management said: "She's fine, she's resting and she's preparing for her September tour."

Just what I said when the news story broke out...

Former boyfriend sues the disappearing jazz singer, claiming he discovered her

By Jonathan Brown

Published: 24 August 2005

The troubled jazz singer Madeleine Peyroux is embroiled in a bitter and long-running legal battle with her former boyfriend and musical collaborator who says he "discovered" her singing in a bar.

The acrimonious case, which casts light on the star's so-called "missing years" between her first hit and her latest success, is being brought by the musician William Galison amid claims of physical abuse, harassment, libel and thwarted ambition. It is expected to be heard at the Federal Court in New York next month. Galison, who has performed with stars such as Carly Simon, Barbara Streisand and Shaka Khan, is claiming $1m (£555,000) in damages resulting from the split with Peyroux.

The dispute centres on the recording of a seven-track CD entitled Got You On My Mind in March 2003, shortly before Peyroux signed with Universal, the world's biggest record label.

The Gallison/Peyroux album is actually pretty good (different, but not patently inferior as claimed in the article) and has gotten a fair deal of listener response here, to both the Gallison stuff and the Gallison/Peyroux stuff.
