slide_advantage_redoux Posted November 13, 2005 Report Posted November 13, 2005 Finally, James Chirillo came out with a solo CD of his own. And it is very good! We were in the west point jazz band at the same time for a couple of years back in the early 80s. He was always a Freddie Green 'in the pocket' style player, and never went for flashy solos, although he was always very tasteful when his turn to play came. He recorded on Doug Lawrence's first leader date (a trio with gtr bass and tenor sax), and had been working steadily in NY since he left the army band in '83. I know he worked with Benny Goodman's band for awhile when he came out of retirement then too. This CD is titled "Sultry Serenade" (and that Ellington selection is on the disc). The label is Nagel Heyer. Along with James are Alan Simon (piano), Greg Cohen (bass), Dave Ratajczak (drums), Randy Sandke (tpt), Scott Robinson (tenor and bass sax!), Vera Mara (vocals, on one selection) and John Carisi (tpt, one selection) Very wide range of styles. I thoroughly enjoy and recommend this session! Quote
jlhoots Posted November 13, 2005 Report Posted November 13, 2005 I saw him live with Kenny Davern. Very nice playing. Greg Cohen was in the group too. Quote
