EKE BBB Posted August 10, 2006 Report Posted August 10, 2006 An absolute masterpiece, IMHO: Alberta Hunter and Victoria Spivey accompanied by Buster Bailey (simply great!), JC Higginbotham on trombone, Cliff Jackson on piano (Victoria Spivey sits in for two tracks), Sidney De Paris on tuba (it´s 1961 but, as in the old times, no contrabass found here) and Zutty Singleton on drums. Lucille Hegamin accompanied by Henry Goodwin on trumpet, Cecil Scott on clarinet, Willie the Lion Smith on piano (his wonderful and almost-impresionistic touch is recognizable even as an accompanist far behind the vocals) and Gene Brooks on drums. Spinning it for the third time today. So once again, thank you Chris Albertson! Quote
EKE BBB Posted August 10, 2006 Author Report Posted August 10, 2006 FWIW, here´s a link to an illustrated discography of the Prestige Bluesville series. Quote
Christiern Posted August 10, 2006 Report Posted August 10, 2006 Thank you for remembering this album. I'm glad to hear that you like it, I certainly had a lot of fun getting it all together. Quote
EKE BBB Posted August 10, 2006 Author Report Posted August 10, 2006 I also love the cover pic, with the Lion dressed on that suit, without any tie, but with his perennial hat and cigar look, and with that cane on his right hand. Quote
Christiern Posted August 10, 2006 Report Posted August 10, 2006 That was a hollow cane (relic of the Prohibition). How about Jimmy Rushing? When I told him about the sessions, he invited himself--I was, of course, delighted. Jimmy loved what he heard. Quote
EKE BBB Posted August 10, 2006 Author Report Posted August 10, 2006 Yes, Jimmie was great! (in all senses) ;-) Insignificant question: looks like one of the musicians playing in that session (12) does not appear on the picture, as there are 12 persons shown, and Jimmie Rushing is one of them, not having taken part in the recording. Who is he? Quote
Christiern Posted August 10, 2006 Report Posted August 10, 2006 You're right, Cliff Jackson is missing from the picture. He may have been in the bathroom, or standing behind Jimmy? Quote
Spontooneous Posted August 10, 2006 Report Posted August 10, 2006 Also a strong contender for Best Album Title Ever. Quote
Christiern Posted August 10, 2006 Report Posted August 10, 2006 Here's one of my very amateurish photos, taken during a break. That's Higgy and Buster with the three ladies (left to right: Alberta, Victoria, Lucille): Quote
EKE BBB Posted August 11, 2006 Author Report Posted August 11, 2006 Thanks for posting that picture, Chris! One day you should publish a book with the hundreds of those "amateurish" photos you took through the years... Quote
