Convert Mpeg4 or CDtrack to a MP3?

I'm trying to convert a Mpeg4 file or rip a CD to an mp3 file. How is this done? I'm I this stupid? I thought a file on my ipod WAS an mp3 file?

Try Mediacoder which is a freeware file converter. I haven't used it for the specific conversion that you need, but generally it seems to work pretty well.
