I have read about the latest NEA Jazz Masters awards, and have read the list of those previously honored.

My question is, what do leading jazz musicians think of this award?

When they are honored, do they feel a warm rush of joy, a feeling that they have been truly recognized at long last, that now their entire life's work was really worth it?

When they are not among the list of those honored, do they feel depressed, go out and get drunk to get over the bitter disappointment of it all?

Do they see the entire program as one more bit of silly nonsense (which happens to come with a check to the winners?)
