.:.impossible Posted December 21, 2006 Report Posted December 21, 2006 Is anyone here familiar with Finnish vibist Severy Pyysalo? My brother gave me a disc of duets with Anders Jormin for my birthday this year. I don't know if I've mentioned it here or not. Highly recommended for those inclined. I just found a write-up at All About Jazz. Click here. Beautiful intrinsic music from two obviously well-studied musicians. This is fast becoming one of my most listened albums. Also released in 2006. I guess it would make two lists for me this year. Easily the most accomplished vibraphone playing I've heard in this four-mallet style. I try to check out as many vibists as I can, even if they aren't necessarily playing in a style that I am interested in. This guy has such a sound. Peaceful, natural, he makes the complex sound so simple. I've been very inspired by his sticking techniques and hear him combining techniques that I haven't heard elsewhere. But it sounds so natural. He doesn't sound like he's recording to wow anyone, which seems to be the case with a lot of tuned percussion. Anyone familiar with Pyysalo, I'd love to get your recommendations for more music, and where to find it! Finnish music isn't easy to come by. Quote
Swinger Posted December 21, 2006 Report Posted December 21, 2006 (edited) You should try his cd "New Sounds,New Moods". Really beautiful stuff! You can buy it (and many other Finnish/Scandinavian cds as well, such as all the cds that have been released on Love Records label) right here: www.ariman.fi/eng They have a fixed shipping rate worldwide! (3 Euros at the moment). Have fun! Ps. I have just checked the site. There is one used copy available for only 5.90 Euros+shipping.I have ordered many cds from them as used copies and they only have very minor wear on them.Buy with confidence! If you should miss the cheap copy,a new copy is going to cost you 11.70 Euros+shipping. Edited December 21, 2006 by Swinger Quote
.:.impossible Posted December 21, 2006 Author Report Posted December 21, 2006 Thanks! I tried to order the disc, but the site is not accepting my card for whatever reason... more proof that Finnish music isn't easy to come by! Damn. Quote
.:.impossible Posted December 21, 2006 Author Report Posted December 21, 2006 So there's a Blue Note Finland? I had no idea. Swinger, if you can help me track down more of Pyysalo's music, I'd be grateful. Thanks! Quote
Swinger Posted December 22, 2006 Report Posted December 22, 2006 So there's a Blue Note Finland? I had no idea. Swinger, if you can help me track down more of Pyysalo's music, I'd be grateful. Thanks! Strange...I mean I just keep wondering why ariman.fi didn't accept your credit card How about doing it in this way: I'll buy that cd (used copy) "New sounds, new Moods" and I'll send it you you? Do you have spare jewel cases available? I could send you that cd without jewel case to save on shipping costs. The total cost would most likely be around 12-13 Euros. You could pay me via Paypal. Write me a PM and let me know your name and full address! I haven't found too many Pyysalo's recordings. There is one cd available at cdon.com called "Turn Out The Stars" but I have no clue what kind of cd that might be. ps. There is a very brief info about Pyysalo at the following site: http://www.musicfinland.com/pyysalo/ Pps. I'll let you know if I find more of his recordings. Quote
Swinger Posted December 22, 2006 Report Posted December 22, 2006 Yes...Blue Note has released many Finnish jazz cds during the past 4-5 years (I have listened to most of them. Some of them are very fine, some are not .I was able to find the following list of Finnish jazz cds released on Blue Note label but the list is not complete: http://www.emi.fi/artistit/genre/12 Every time when there is document on Pyysalo, the following story is mentioned in one way or another: (quoted from www.musicfinland.com/pyysalo) Pyysalo made his mark as a vibes player at the Pori Jazz festival in 1982. The turning point in his career came two years later, when he was heard by Paquito D'Rivera and Sarah Vaughan. As a result, they both invited him to sit in for their own sets and a minor legend was born. A couple of weeks later Pyysalo got his first gigs in the USA, including a stint at the Village Vanguard with Paquito D'Rivera's quintet. Quote
