epistrophy arts Posted April 2, 2007 Report Posted April 2, 2007 (edited) Mats Gustafsson (Sweden) - baritone and tenor sax Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten (Norway) - bass Paal Nilssen-Love (Norway) - drums * "Tapping into rock's most primal forces with a fire and fury that?s something to behold" MOJO * "The Thing Convert nouveau punk and vintage garage-rock into a roaring scream up, but the sheer energy and love of the music keep gimmickry at bay" UNCUT * "The sheer power they can generate from wood, metal, breath and muscle is stunning" BBC * "Absurdly cool." DJ Magazine Free Jazz ecstasy meets the intensity of Garage Rock. The Thing blends the spontaneity and imagination of classic free jazz with the emotional immediacy of underground garage rock. With acoustic traditional jazz instrumentation, the three young Scandinavians can match the power of the fiercest rock band. The Thing's repertoire consists of 60's era new-jazz (Don Cherry, Ayler, James Blood Ulmer, David Murray) and reinterpretations of underground rock classics (PJ Harvey, White Stripes, Sonics). This is no watered down jazz-rock. The Thing take the most uncompromising aspects of both genres and turn up the heat. J Larsen Posted April 2, 2007 Report Posted April 2, 2007 (edited) I take it that the Tonic show has been canceled. Did you get an alternate venue? PS: In case you hadn't heard, this is what I am referring to: http://www.tonicnyc.com/ Edited April 2, 2007 by J Larsen Quote
epistrophy arts Posted April 5, 2007 Author Report Posted April 5, 2007 from Patricia Nicholson regarding the cancelled Tonic gigs! halelujah for Vision fest!!! Friends of Vision, Arts for Art responds to the closing of Tonic with a concert series based on Tonic’s cancellations. On seven nights in April and May, musicians who were scheduled to play at Tonic, will now be playing one block east, at the Clemente Soto Velez LES Gallery. The number of venues where this music is consistently presented in Manhattan is deteriorating to a dangerous low. Arts for Art and the Vision Festival will be working with CSV to address this issue by hosting these concerts, as well as seeking a way to continue to present this music on a regular basis. The April schedule follows, and the May concerts will be announced soon. It is imperative to have places where artists of this caliber can be heard in Manhattan on a regular basis. These performances are funded in part by a John Zorn benefit performance. *********** What: Vision Tonic Time: sets at 7:30pm and 9:30pm Place: Clemente Soto Velez LES Gallery 107 Suffolk Street, New York, NY - one block east of Tonic!
