riverrat Posted November 18, 2007 Report Posted November 18, 2007 (edited) I acquired this one via a trade with another member here, and I'm really liking it. AMG discusses Pullen as sort of avant-garde but this set is quite accessible. His band is the "African-Brazilian Connection" and I am a big fan of that sort of cross-pollination, so perhaps that is why it appeals. At any rate, I'm seeking recommendations of other sessions in Pullen's catalog that approximate this sound. Thanks in advance! Edited November 18, 2007 by riverrat Quote
kh1958 Posted November 18, 2007 Report Posted November 18, 2007 That 's easy. There were also two fine studio albums by Don Pullen and the Afro-Brazilian Connection on Blue Note--Kele Mou Bana, and Ode to Life. In another example of cultural fusion, there is also Pullen's final recording, also on Blue Note, Sacred Common Ground, which fuses jazz with American Indian music. But don't stop there, you also need the Mosiac Don Pullen select, which features Pullen's two trio recordings on Blue Note and his two Blue Note recordings with the quartet of George Adams, Dannie Richmond, and Cameron Brown. The Pullen is one of my favorite Selects. Great music! Quote
riverrat Posted November 18, 2007 Author Report Posted November 18, 2007 Thank you for the replies. I found a copy of Kele Mou Bana for a decent price, and many more copies at indecent prices. Perhaps I will ask Santa for the Select, that also looks very good. Quote
