I know Cynthia. Is it the cover you like, or does that also go for her music—have you heard her play?

both!

seriously though, as i am sure you know from my threads i love jazz music played on instruments not normally associated with the genre.

galliano, turre and toots come immediately to mind. of course RRK had an array of unconventional instruments.

i enjoy bela fleck and frankly i cannot think of another jazz banjoist - enter cynthia sayer.

i heard some samples on her web site which peaked my interest - hence this thread soliciting comments.

so how do you know her chris?

I dropped by a little Upper West Side club where she was playing, and immediately recognized Elmer Snowden's influence. I gave her a pick that had belonged to Elmer. Last time I saw Cynthia was in my apartment—she and I are in a upcoming documentary on the banjo, and they were shooting an interview.

Have you heard Elmer Snowden's "Harlem Banjo" album?

so i scored a copy of harlem banjo - (not cheap!)

i definately enjoyed it chris - much thanks for the recommendation!

now i'll have to look for some more snowden! i also really enjoyed the piano work on the cd.

i am still looking forward to a discussion of cynthia sayer and her music though!

It is included in the Verve Sessions Prez box (on Verve), but I think it may also be available online—somewhere. At least I once came across it there... I'll look around. Not a very good interview, but since only 2 exist...

BTW, as I looked around, I saw it listed as having taken place at WHAT-FM in Philly. It was actually at WCAU.

i must confess that i am not sophisticated enough to catch the snowden influence.

i do know that i am enjoying the music (sara caswell's violin especially!)

it is pretty funny that i spun the disc 3 times before checking the liner notes! what a chuckle i had seeing that you wrote them!!
