Bright Moments Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 where to start? how about here: Quote
Christiern Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 I know Cynthia. Is it the cover you like, or does that also go for her music—have you heard her play? Quote
Bright Moments Posted December 18, 2008 Author Report Posted December 18, 2008 I know Cynthia. Is it the cover you like, or does that also go for her music—have you heard her play? both! seriously though, as i am sure you know from my threads i love jazz music played on instruments not normally associated with the genre. galliano, turre and toots come immediately to mind. of course RRK had an array of unconventional instruments. i enjoy bela fleck and frankly i cannot think of another jazz banjoist - enter cynthia sayer. i heard some samples on her web site which peaked my interest - hence this thread soliciting comments. so how do you know her chris? Christiern Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 I dropped by a little Upper West Side club where she was playing, and immediately recognized Elmer Snowden's influence. I gave her a pick that had belonged to Elmer. Last time I saw Cynthia was in my apartment—she and I are in a upcoming documentary on the banjo, and they were shooting an interview. Have you heard Elmer Snowden's "Harlem Banjo" album? Quote
Bright Moments Posted December 18, 2008 Author Report Posted December 18, 2008 Have you heard Elmer Snowden's "Harlem Banjo" album? no, but on your recommendation i will pick it up! thanks! Quote

Bright Moments Posted December 29, 2008 Author Report Posted December 29, 2008 by the way chris - i didn't know that you were a producer! what other albums/cd's did you produce? Quote
Christiern Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 Most of them are listed here. Quote
Bright Moments Posted December 29, 2008 Author Report Posted December 29, 2008 very nice! by the way i received my copy of cynthia sayer's "attractions" today (directly from the artist!) i am looking forward to spinning it today! Quote
Christiern Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 It is included in the Verve Sessions Prez box (on Verve), but I think it may also be available online—somewhere. At least I once came across it there... I'll look around. Not a very good interview, but since only 2 exist... BTW, as I looked around, I saw it listed as having taken place at WHAT-FM in Philly. It was actually at WCAU. Quote

Christiern Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 No, that one is the other one, by Francois Pontif. It is more interesting, IMHO, but very poor audio quality. My interview was done in a radio studio. Quote

Christiern Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 Can you hear the Snowden influence? Quote
Bright Moments Posted December 31, 2008 Author Report Posted December 31, 2008 i must confess that i am not sophisticated enough to catch the snowden influence. i do know that i am enjoying the music (sara caswell's violin especially!) it is pretty funny that i spun the disc 3 times before checking the liner notes! what a chuckle i had seeing that you wrote them!!
