jazzbo550 Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 Hi , I hope I am posting in the right forum I am making a documentary film on Jazz in India that attempts to trace the history of a small but passionate jazz culture in India. I am trying to locate copies of teddy Weatherfod recordings (other than that available on a compilation "Hot Jazz and Dance in India." Apparently Teddy recorded quite prolifically during his stay in Calcutta in the early 40s and from what I now "seeded " Indian Jazz musicians who in some cases (Cawas Khatau AKA Rudy Cotton) went to become band leaders in their own right. Teddy also groomed George Banks (Real name Buddhaprit) who is the father of Louis Banks (grammy nominated on Miles from India and a recent MclAughlin release). AS I develop this film , I hope to reach out to the folks on this board for advice and information. For background, Please see some clips from this work in progress and more on the Blue Rhythm blog http://bluerhythm.wordpress.com Thanks Quote
jazztrain Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 jazzbo550: I can't help you with any Teddy Weatherford (note spelling) recordings made in India beyond those on the Harlequin "Hot Jazz and Dance in India" LP which I gather you have already. You might be interested in the following thread that concerns, in part, Weatherford recordings: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...mp;hl=Gonsalves Perhaps you can shed some light on one issue that's discussed in that earlier thread, namely whether the tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves who recorded with Weatherford in India is the same musician who played with Duke Ellington. My recollection is that I found a book online that stated that it was a different Paul Gonsalves. However, another poster stated that it was in fact the same musician. Quote
