alocispepraluger102 Posted March 19, 2010 Report Posted March 19, 2010 This Friday, March 19th, I am presenting the New York-based Trio Tarana with renowned percussionist and jazz musician Ravish Momin. The local group Chakra will open. An Evening of World Rhythms featuring Ravish Momin's Trio Tarana with local guests, Chakra Friday, March 19th from 9 pm - midnight Columbus Dance Theater- 592 E. Main St. Admission: $10 adults, $5 students with valid ID. I've given the event the general (generic?) title of "An Evening of World Rhythms", but more specifically, both of these groups have a significant Indian classical music influence. Trio Tarana represents a unique confluence of classical Indian music, electronic rhythms, and jazz. In the trio Ravish Momin plays a mixed kit (traps + tabla) with two string players, while one musician also manipulates electronic beats from a laptop. If you enjoy odd time signatures, and really fast rhythms-- this is certain to grab your interest. A fun tidbit about Ravish Momin is that while being active in the New York experimental music scene, he is also a percussionist in pop star Shakira's touring band. Ravish has also performed with William Parker, Billy Bang, Brad Shepik, Christian Howes, Napoleon Maddox and others. Chakra is a collaborative local project involving Hakaun Kaya, Brad Mellen, Brad Poure, Matteo Amburgy, Hans Utter, and Utpola Borah. The group is focused on Indian music and rhythms, and their sound shows they have really dug deep into that music.
