Addison, TX – On Sunday, August 15, 2010 5:00 PM. Jazz for Peace featuring Singer / Pianist / Composer Rick DellaRatta, considered by many to be one of the finest Jazz Artists performing today, will perform a special Benefit Concert for The Moghamo Cultural and Development Association (MEDA-USA) at SOHO Food and Jazz located at 5290 Belt Line Road in Addison, TX .

MEDA-USA - A Moghamo cultural and development Association was created on the August 15, 1997 with a commitment to make use of the technical, fiscal and intellectual resources available to Moghamoans in the USA for the economic, cultural and political betterment of our predominantly impoverished people back at home in Moghamo, in the North West Province of Cameroon; to work incessantly to ensure peace, unity and progress amongst some of our feuding villages by being living examples and above all; to develop, maintain and uphold our most cherished cultural values for posterity. This benefit concert will support construction of a modern library to service 16 secondary and high schools within the Batibo subdivision. For more information please http://www.moghamo.org/Projects/Library_Project/library_project.html.

Having performed with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie to Paquito D' Rivera, Rick DellaRatta is now considered by many to be one of the finest Singer/Pianists performing today and one of only a handful of Jazz Artists who can make a successful musical presentation to a large audience without having to abandon the true art form of Jazz. His unique and original piano playing and composing has been compared in print to Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner, Keith Jarrett, Joe Zawinul, Horace Silver, Oscar Peterson and Thelonius Monk while his signature vocal sound and style has been likened to Chet Baker, Billy Holiday, Joao Gilberto, Ivan Lins, Michael Franks and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

I remember when this guy had promo copies of his CDs sent to our radio station. Some of the cheesiest, most unswinging shit I have ever heard out of a pro. The comping makes me cringe. If you want to support the Moghamo people, might I suggest simply making a donation?

years ago when i was living in nyc, i answered an ad dellarata had put up asking for someone to arrange horn parts for him. i don't remember where i saw the ad. i met him at his relatively fancy highrise west side apartment somewhere around 11th avenue and 30th street. he impressed me as not being too knowledgable about writing for other instruments or arranging in general - ie: not being sure whether trumpets transpose a major 2nd, etc... and that's cool - he's a piano player/singer. not all players have to know that stuff. but i also got the impression he wasn't too sure what he wanted generally from the music even though it was his gig he needed this work done for.

so after talking w/ him for about 20-30 minutes i was confident i could do something w/ the lead sheets he'd given me that would work for the gig he had coming up. i left and called him back in a few days to tell him i was done and i wondered what he thought was a fair price for the work. he told me he figured no pay was necessary.

i told him he wouldn't be seeing my arrangements.

and i agree w/ you big wheel. i didn't care for his music much either. oh well...

I learned this lesson the hard way long ago- always decide on price before you do the work! :D
