Interesting idea for a post. When I was in college, I worked on the Union Pacific in Eastern Oregon. Two of the summers I worked as a signalman. This involved digging post holes, setting poles, attaching cross arms, glass and stringing wire. I've climbed some sixty foot leaners in my day. I'll bet the ones we worked on are still up and running.

sixty feet straight up is awesome. i climbed a big fire tower in our forest a few weeks ago and it freaked 67 year old me.

how do they service those huge metal transmission line towers?

Actually, I think they have a squirrel cage ladder system that runs up the middle of the structure.
