I just landed at SFO and will be driving across the old span in about 15 minutes. I drove across it on the day of Loma Prieta too, when a section of the top deck collapsed. But I'm fearless/foolish.

Looks like the new span of the Oakland Bay Bridge is just a money pit.

They now say the support rods are way too stiff to withstand an earthquake and will need to be refitted.

I'll be surprised if that bridge ever opens to anything more than bicycle and pedestrian traffic to Treasure Island.

It was a Naval installation but now is a budding housing development.

Not sure where you got any Pelosi connection. It is owned by the City of San Francisco.

It's owned by the Navy. " Mr. Pelosi" may be one of many developers interested in putting this uneeded property to use - commercial, winery residential.

From what I have read, Congress gave the land to the City of SF for free back in 2008.

And you're right, developers are making this once useless land into a residential/multi-use facility. Great idea if you ask me.

Glad to hear the Island is now in City hands. I hadn't heard, though I knew it wasn't private. Hopefully, the Navy took care of clean up before handing over a "hot potato". (Sure, the cleanup was all government money anyway you slice it, but I have more faith in the Navy on this task. But what do I know... ;-) )

I think you're right.

Either way, I hope it works out well in the end.

The Bay Bridge extension, however, is a disaster.
