Saxophone__Vagina Posted May 4, 2004 Report Posted May 4, 2004 Hello, I am a huge art tatum fan, i own the complete pablo group and solo box sets plus the Complete RCA two disc set, what is left for this crazy cat to buy? I've been looking at The Piano Grand Master Box Set, but am not sure how that would match up to my current collection, with repeats and such. Any recomendations would be cool. Quote

Saxophone__Vagina Posted May 4, 2004 Author Report Posted May 4, 2004 -early recordings: Classics (for a "complete approach") OR the Proper Box (for a "fairly comprehensive approach" for the 30s). Guess the 2CD Decca "Classic early solos 1934-37" is duplicated with both Classics and Proper releases From the thread quoted above Looks like i am in similar shoes here as you, i cannot find this early classics set you refer to, where have you seen it? did you get either of these? quality? The Decca "Classic early solos" is a single CD, not a 2 CD set (it was my mistake). The sound quality is quite good for that era, except for a few tracks (four or five) having a lot of surface noise. I decided to pick all the Chronological Classics, and not only for the 30´s, (still haven´t, but I´m on the right track ) and to reject the Proper Box... just because I´m becoming a Tatum completist. I´ve listened to volumes 1, 2 & 5 at length. 3 & 4 are on my huge and evergrowing pile of recently purchased and unheard discs. They are really good, IMHO! There are many different sources for that music (broadcastings, club dates, private tapes...), but sound´s pretty good in most of the recordings I´ve heard. Many solo performances and trio dates and a few larger ensembles. Of course, I´d recommend first all the dates when you can hear Tatum alone (the man at his best!), but there are some outstanding trio recordings, and some interesting curiosities. Highly recommendable (at least for a Tatum-addict). Quote
