Wish I could convey the overwhelming scent of bluebonnets.
This was in Austin a couple of weeks ago.

Nice.  I used to love travelling in the Hill Country when I lived in Texas, to see the bluebonnets.  One of the last bluebonnet specific trips I took was to see Willow City Loop in Fredericksburg.

  2. I was in the Thunderbird Zia on Saturday a.m. for Record Store Day. I got there at 5:00 a.m., but there were already about 200 people in line, a number of whom had been camping overnight.  Got the things I wanted, though, so it was a success.

That's the location that is closest to me (I'm also in the north Scottsdale/Carefree Highway area), but it's still a 30 minute drive from my house.  I also shop in the Bethany Zia location (which seems to be their "flagship" store, but only recently moved to that location from the one they'd previously been in for many years), but it is a little sketchier area of Phoenix.  I've never felt threatened there though.

I didn't realize you'd be here in town as long as you have been, or I'd have offered to meet up for a coffee or something.

Gosh. You weren't joking. Scottsdale hotel to The In Groove and back was a 32 mile round trip, taking two hours.

Bought Colors by Raul de Souza, which was nice. Panicked a bit about time (plus in a jet lagged fug) so didn't go to Zia in the end.

Sorry to hear, but glad you got to The In Groove regardless.  Hope you enjoy the rest of your time here in the "Valley".

Joe Ely "Down On The Drag" (MCA Records)                                                             1979 ....

This is a good one!  I find things I love on every Ely record.  Both his solo work and with The Flatlanders.

I've meet and hung out with Joe a number of times when I lived in Texas.  He's a great guy, and easy to talk to.  I suspect his touring has slowed down substantially, sadly, as he's gotten older.

Here's a song he released last year that isn't on an album yet.

There's an old boat buried in Short Sands Beach in York, ME. It can get exposed after strong storms and used to make an appearance about every 10-20 years. Lately, it's been popping up every 4 or 5 years. After this recent bout of storms, it's out again, probably more than it's ever been. I took this today on my daily walk.

Someone studied the wreckage the last time it was exposed and estimated it to be from the late 1700's.

Makes a change from the usual moggy (aka breakfast for thus guy !)

We moved out here to the desert about a year ago now.  One of the first things that people told us was if you have a cat (moggy is a GREAT word by the way!) or small dog, you don't allow them outside in your yard by themselves at all.  Too many predators here that see them as a meal - coyotes, bobcats, even the occasional mountain lion.

We see coyotes frequently, and hear them almost daily. Also see javelinas, rattlesnakes, scorpions and other fun things.

Quite dramatic lighting and night sky, thanks for sharing!

I guess picking a favorite historical point and then screaming at clouds seems to be the preferred attention-getter. Perceptions of cultural stagnation are highly subjective and depend on one's values, interests, and the aspects of culture one deems most significant. What one person sees as a lack of innovation, another might view as a period of rich, albeit less conspicuous, cultural evolution. Cultural movements and their impacts are usually easier to recognize in retrospect. What might seem like a stagnant period could be laying the groundwork for future cultural explosions that we're simply too close to see. Maybe we've created an environment where survival takes precedence over cultural innovation, or where creativity is stifled by commercial pressures and the pursuit of profit over artistry (which has never suddenly been a "new" thing). Seems like a lot of pearl-clutching to me.

Agree with this post almost verbatim.  I suspect that as many folks get older, they feel like there's stagnation when in reality there may not be.  We just tend to focus on the stuff we like/liked, often to the exclusion of newer things.  Because of that we don't see the firehose of "new" that is continuously pouring out.

I'm 58, and enjoy music, movies, shows, theater, and the like.  I like to think I'm on top of things, but I'm really not.  My daughter and son-in-law that live here locally sing along with songs passionately, yet in many cases they're songs that I've never heard of before.  For them it's a rich time I think.  Same with our kids that live in other states.

I actually like that, and it helps me realize culture kept moving along, and I'm simply not in the target age demographic for the most part anymore.  I'm fine with that, and still like what I like, some new, some old.  But I know it all continues.

I've seen about 1/2 a dozen 'reaction" videos on youtube, recorded by black people, who laugh uproariously at that scene.  Nobody has ever reacted negatively or suggested that the word used offends them.  That's above and beyond the fact that humor can and must be offensive.

I get that the scene (and the movie overall) mocks racists and racism, and in that context Little's character is speaking the language that those racists use and relate to.

But watching 6 reaction videos is anecdotal to the point you seem predisposed to making here, and certainly doesn't mean that nobody in the Black community has ever reacted negatively.

Also, in general there are all sorts of movies that still get made that can be offensive and funny.  Team America (holy cow, that's already 20 years old too!) had scenes that were probably offensive culturally to many (not to mention the puppet sex scenes).  Movie 43 had some pretty offensive scenes as well.
