  1. I'm sorry you all do not trust me. I have already said that we handled things badly on these boards. For that I truly apologise and my past statements in that respect hold. However, I have discussed this with Dan and the other admins and mods and we have set ground rules in place so that this situation won't arise again. I believe we've learned a lot about each other over the past few days. I believe that the discussions on these (your) boards are for the most part adult and responsible. I understand that as with all message boards, people are just that - people. They sometimes make mistakes. You have a thread on these boards discussing how to achieve racial equality. I would suggest that this is but one part of a larger issue to do with better understanding and acceptance of a multitude of things which together make up human beings. This is a statement I've asked "the team" on norahjones.info to sign up to in the wake of events here: No-one has yet refused to accept these conditions. As I have said, people sometimes make mistakes. Should we punish them indefinitely, or learn lessons, forgive and move on?

    Jazz Vocalists

Now I HAVE been listening to Rhian Benson and Weekend Players recently ... a definite jazz vibe from those.

    Jazz Vocalists

Thanks for the great responses. So much to read, before deciding which water to dip my toe into! It's really odd how we individually perceive an artist's particular genre (or maybe I'm just odd ). I love Sinatra, Armstrong, Nat King Cole. I've never really categorised them as jazz singers - just great singers. Maybe it's just female jazz singers I'm put off - or maybe modern jazz singers. Not that I'd put Cleo Laine into a modern category - but neither is she in the definitive "classical" jazz section. At least in my mind. I thought Rooster's comment was interesting: Firstly because here is a classically trained singer who doesn't like opera (oh, yes, I like this guy!), but more interestingly because he can't sing jazz. My wife is a classically trained pianist. She can "play jazz" if there's a score to follow. She cannot, to save her life, improvise "jazzically" and she'd really love to. This could start a whole new thread: Does classical training hamper jazz interpretation? Back to vocalists: anyone heard any Blu Cantrell? I understand her parents' background is in jazz - and it shines through in a number of her songs .

    Jazz Vocalists

Hello guys! Some of have probably met me on "that other thread". That was certainly heart stopping at times! Actually, it was more bowel opening, at least for me! I thought I'd drop by and post something to do with jazz. I started along the lines of "what color does jazz make you think of?" (burnt orange) And then I though, nah, it's probably been done before. So, then I thought I'd begin with "I like jazz", but (1) I've already said that, and (2) it's too general. Jazz is like alcohol - I like beer, but I don't like whisky. So, what jazz DON'T I like? And I immediately thought Cleo Laine. Now, I apologise right away to anyone who does like Cleo's singing. I really wish I could hear it like you do. But, you know, I studiously avoid jazz albums with vocalists JUST IN CASE they sound like her (is it called scat?). I stick to instrumental jazz. I notice that organissimo doesn't have a vocalist. I searched the boards for discussions about vocalists and couldn't find any. So, I thought I'd start one. Do all jazz vocalists sound like Cleo? How can one appreciate her style? Do any of you feel the same way? Or am I talking rubbish? How about some recommendations? (obviously, for singers NOT like Cleo ) Incidentally, although you have a forum for non-jazz music, you don't seem to have one for non-organissimo-jazz music. I guess that means the whole board is the right place to post a jazz topic?
  5. To the best of my knowledge: not true. We have some posts along the lines of "tHaT fUcKiN SkRiEkIn BiTcH StOlE A***ls GrAmMy". We have deleted posts like that. I cannot recall a single post saying Michelle Branch should have won - whether polite or not.
  6. It is unacceptable to me that my site (which incidentally is not some corporate institution, but a fan site set up by me) be associated with anyone who uses any means to threaten anyone. No matter how the words are phrased. I read his posts here as threatening. If this was my board I'd be madder than you are. On the other hand, it takes a lot to make me mad. This did it, though. You have raised a number of valid points which require answering - at least to my satisfaction. However, as of now, musicboy is not officially associated with norahjones.info, except in the status of an ordinary member, nor has he ever represented the views or ethos of the site on the organissimo message boards. I do not regard this outcome as a victory for anyone. It is a sad reflection on society and the way we perceive other human beings, whose views and opinions may not agree with our own. For what it may be worth at this stage, I think you're a cool bunch of guys - and the band sounds great! Rob
  7. OK, I just caught up on this thread. I'm in the UK and have a family life as well. So, it's taken loger than I would have liked or thought necessary. What can I say? I'm sorry, guys. This was not good cop, bad cop - at least not on my part. It's not a good time for me to post - I'm still very angry and upset, not to say embarrassed. If I can face you guys again, I'll post later.
  8. Hmmmm. Well, as long as there's no spanking involved ...
  9. Hello all! I've just been lurking on your board and read this entire norahjones.info thread. Who am I? I'm the nj.i site admin. I would like to set the record straight and address any issues between us. I don't think we handled this particularly well. Sure, you wanted to have a little fun at our expense, but I've got better things to do with my time than try to identify who's doing what, where from and why. For what it's worth, my opinion is that if the post is innocuous, let it stay. If T's & C's aren't infringed, don't ban. So, I'd like to apologise for our over-reaction. You guys do have opinions and a right to express them. The world would be a poorer place if we all thought the same and liked the same music. Some of your spoof questions (and Q&A "sessions") could introduce our members to other equally GOOD music. I like "real" jazz, myself. Anyone appreciate Barbara Thompson? And I for one would appreciate information on whether SACD or DVDA is the way to go (although I prefer vinyl myself). I am going to un-ban people who have not actually violated our T's & C's and restore their threads. WE know (at least some of them) are spoof. You know we know. I hope you will find our boards useful to air your knowledge with us - and ours with you. We may all learn something. I discovered that the BNBB had closed down. I wasn't aware of that - and I used to post on there. It just goes to show how wrapped up in ourselves we can become. Of course, it's easier to ban, than to un-ban, so if I don't get it right, just let me know! On the other hand, we ask you to honor our T's & C's, as we would expect to honor yours. We DO maintain a family-friendly atmosphere. It may not be cool by your standards to do so, but that is our choice. Please respect it as we respect yours. Thanks for listening! Rob
