Notice how this LP changes when you look at it from different angles. (see next post...sorry, I don't know how to attach more than one on a post!) -

Funny how Buddy looks so at peace and calm here! -
I read that MJ is being sought on child molestation charges by a California D.A. who has an arrest warrant in hand. When will the MJ circus end? It has been reported that his attorneys are arranging for him to surrender to authorities in a manner in which he won't have to wear handcuffs and be paraded in front of the public. Tsk tsk, how utterly embarassing. I would feel so bad for him. Where is his concern for the children...his "victims"? Granted the man ( ) is immensely talented, but at what point does it cease to matter? Him, along with his supporters and family say that these outlandish charges always pop up when he is at work on something new. Give me a break. Just because you are in such a position of power doesn't mean you can break all the rules; especially those that involve sexual contact with minors. It was in '93 when he allegedly paid millions of hush up money to his last "victim". Yes, I know he is innocent until proven guilty, but it looks pretty bad. This is the same guy who admts sleeping in the same bed with other parent's children (non sexually of course ) Time will tell, but I fear that once again, a person with enormous financial means will "buy" his own special degree of justice. We have seen enough of THAT already. It sickens me. The bottom line is that children need to be safe.

Why do I keep thinking that these fellows need to be driving around in Starsky and Hutch's Ford Torino? -

There is something disturbing about this pic. What is that furry thing hanging in front of the guy standing on the right? Please tell me it isn't a gerbil escaping from his trousers! -

The caption should read: "Are you sure the vests were to be machine dried? or: "Jesus, I feel so damn GAY in this outfit!" OR: "Why does Mom always get to sit in front?" -

This one looks creepy in a way. Looking at it too long makes me think I am in some old musty flat in England eating crumpets and drinking lukewarm tea. -

I wish my 7th grade English teacher had dressed like that! She was FINE. -
Soul, I can relate with the coming and going of gigs. For the past 8 years, I had an annual 3 week gig with a western swing band every February. We would drive down to Houston, and play the Rodeo. Each of the 9 guys got an efficiency apartment of our own, a meal for every performance was catered, and the bread was good too. (plus, we had every evening off!) Well anyway, starting this next year they are gonna use a guy who comes in solo with a hard drive to play recorded music for the competition! (Damn Karaoke!) And the thing that really sucks is that he isn't even paying royalties for the samples he uses! Our leader has a lawsuit pending, and the rodeo management team was informed of the illegality of their new "entertainer" I always counted myself lucky to have that gig. It is usually slow in Dallas that time of the year. There is a small chance that the snake will be fired to keep the rodeo committee out of trouble with ASCAP, etc, but I am not counting on it. What I do know is this: When one door closes, a couple more always seem to open up. On a metaphysical plane, I truly believe that there is no such thing as accidents. Everything happens for a reason. The problem/challenge lies in recognizing WHY. Good luck Soul Stream. It will work out.

Thanks Chuck. BTW, I met you at JSangrey's house some months ago, and we discussed Albert Mangelsdorff. Hope all is well with you and yours. Glad to be on board here finally! B)

I have always been fascinated with anecdotal history, or at least anecdotal stories attributed to historically notable musicians. Lester Young had a language unto his own, and I know there are countless quotes of his that I have never heard of. It isn't my interest to share embarassing tales, just ones that are classic, ones that hurt no one, and that are humorous in nature. I know this could go anywhere, so maybe it shouldn't be limited to Lester? We all have probably read the Bill Crow anecdote book. Even then, if some from that book are shared here, what the hell. Here are a couple Lester anecdotes I keep hearing. 1) He is at a jam session (or a club date?) and a particular ryhthm section player wasn't making it. Lester was seated at the bar, when the offending player walks over and starts to schmooze Lester. He says "So Lester, when WAS the last time we played together?" Lester replies: "Tonight" 2) Lester was playing at the club in NYC that Pee Wee Marquette emceed at (the Half Note or the 5-Spot?). Pee Wee was reportedly very rude to musicians, and one evening he had been giving Lester particularly major grief. Lester lashed out at him saying: "Get out of my face, you half a mother-f***er!" 3) Lester turned to a drummer and advised him to play less on the crash cymbal and more on the ride cymbal, but in his own way. He asked him to give him more of the "titty cymbal" and less of the crash.

Nice! I need to find a recording of that. When is the date of recording?

Elvin Live at the Lighthouse
slide_advantage_redoux replied to slide_advantage_redoux's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
If you have the space and still use a turntable, keep the LP. If you no longer play LPs, sell them. (so someone else can listen to them) Even with a crowbar, no one could pry my turntable from my white-knuckled grasp! In fact, I have a couple of functional spares. I would like to land a player that could play 78s. I am keeping Elvin at the Lighthouse, even though I have the cds (not the Mosaic though) Another Lighthouse date that is among my favorites is Lee Morgan's double LP with Bennie Maupin. Now THAT was a band! -
By my own admission, I have never really checked out Serge Chaloff, but I just got this CD release on 1210 Music entitled "Fable of Mabel" (9003-2) This is some great stuff! Anyone with a chance to pick up this CD shouldn't hesitate! Compositions by Mariani, Twardick, Chaloff himself plus a few standards nicely arranged. I had just a little knowledge of Chaloff, mainly regarding his bad facets, how he was booted from the Herman band, etc. The liner notes on this production are very informative. I was shocked to learn that he died so young. (not yet 37 years old) It is easy to see how he would be overshadowed in the era when Mulligan was garnering so much attention with his playing and writing, but Serge could PLAY! He was so facile and musical. Check it out. It is worth the time.

Most bizzare band names of all time.
slide_advantage_redoux replied to Brandon Burke's topic in Miscellaneous Music
A western swing guitarist I sometimes work with has a great name for a 3 male vocalist bluegrass band called "Chicks See Dicks" I always liked that, but of course you'd get sued. How about "Felonius Punk" The Fifth Dementia" has a ring to it. -
Since Elvin Jones' Blue Note "Live at the Lighthouse" was issued on CDs, is the LP particularly desirable or particularly collectible? I know, that is a subjective quiestion, but I was just curious. Thanks.... B)
