  1. This find is a little dated, but it started the foundation of my collection. When in the army band at west point in '82, I saw an ad in the paper for "jazz lps". The seller had played trumpet in new york, but had retired 12 years prior, and finally came the conclusion that he was never going to listen to the LPs anymore. In his collection were Savoys, Riversides, Blue Notes, Pacific Jazz, etc. All told, he had 170 LPs, and they had the common theme of having trumpet players on them. He wanted $3 a pop, and I asked if he'd take $2 each if I took the whole lot. He went for it. Most were in decent shape. The jewels in the set included "Introducing Lee Morgan" on Savoy, a handful of Hank Mobley (with Freddie), 5 Freddie Hubbard Blue Notes. a couple Jackie McLean Blue Notes (one with Charles Tolliver!) and nearly a dozen Messenger LPs. (w/ Freddie, Lee, Clifford, et al depending on the groups) I counted myself fortunate to have read the paper that day!
  2. What a great site. The volunteer DJs that spin sounds at KNTU (University of North Texas Jazz) need this BAD! They regularly butcher musician's names. It has gotten the point where listener's keep lists. Here are examples (with their interpretation in quotes) Dizzy Gillespie - "Gillepsie" Paul Gonzalves - "Gone-salves" Ed Soph - "Sahf" Steve Houghton - "Huffton" and the list goes on and on.... Thanks for the link

  4. This Boyd Raeburn LP cover reminds me of the Beat generation/beret guy artwork on some other covers.
  5. Notice how this LP changes when you look at it from different angles. (see next post...sorry, I don't know how to attach more than one on a post!)
  6. You know its time for bed at MJ's house, when the big hand touches the little hand.
  7. I read that MJ is being sought on child molestation charges by a California D.A. who has an arrest warrant in hand. When will the MJ circus end? It has been reported that his attorneys are arranging for him to surrender to authorities in a manner in which he won't have to wear handcuffs and be paraded in front of the public. Tsk tsk, how utterly embarassing. I would feel so bad for him. Where is his concern for the children...his "victims"? Granted the man ( ) is immensely talented, but at what point does it cease to matter? Him, along with his supporters and family say that these outlandish charges always pop up when he is at work on something new. Give me a break. Just because you are in such a position of power doesn't mean you can break all the rules; especially those that involve sexual contact with minors. It was in '93 when he allegedly paid millions of hush up money to his last "victim". Yes, I know he is innocent until proven guilty, but it looks pretty bad. This is the same guy who admts sleeping in the same bed with other parent's children (non sexually of course ) Time will tell, but I fear that once again, a person with enormous financial means will "buy" his own special degree of justice. We have seen enough of THAT already. It sickens me. The bottom line is that children need to be safe.
  8. Why do I keep thinking that these fellows need to be driving around in Starsky and Hutch's Ford Torino?
  9. There is something disturbing about this pic. What is that furry thing hanging in front of the guy standing on the right? Please tell me it isn't a gerbil escaping from his trousers!
  10. The caption should read: "Are you sure the vests were to be machine dried? or: "Jesus, I feel so damn GAY in this outfit!" OR: "Why does Mom always get to sit in front?"
  11. This one looks creepy in a way. Looking at it too long makes me think I am in some old musty flat in England eating crumpets and drinking lukewarm tea.
  12. One of my favorites. I often wonder where I would be now had I found this WHILE I was married!
  13. Love is Blue, especially if your name was Spider Savage.
  14. I wish my 7th grade English teacher had dressed like that! She was FINE.
  15. Soul, I can relate with the coming and going of gigs. For the past 8 years, I had an annual 3 week gig with a western swing band every February. We would drive down to Houston, and play the Rodeo. Each of the 9 guys got an efficiency apartment of our own, a meal for every performance was catered, and the bread was good too. (plus, we had every evening off!) Well anyway, starting this next year they are gonna use a guy who comes in solo with a hard drive to play recorded music for the competition! (Damn Karaoke!) And the thing that really sucks is that he isn't even paying royalties for the samples he uses! Our leader has a lawsuit pending, and the rodeo management team was informed of the illegality of their new "entertainer" I always counted myself lucky to have that gig. It is usually slow in Dallas that time of the year. There is a small chance that the snake will be fired to keep the rodeo committee out of trouble with ASCAP, etc, but I am not counting on it. What I do know is this: When one door closes, a couple more always seem to open up. On a metaphysical plane, I truly believe that there is no such thing as accidents. Everything happens for a reason. The problem/challenge lies in recognizing WHY. Good luck Soul Stream. It will work out.
  16. Thanks Chuck. BTW, I met you at JSangrey's house some months ago, and we discussed Albert Mangelsdorff. Hope all is well with you and yours. Glad to be on board here finally! B)
  17. I have always been fascinated with anecdotal history, or at least anecdotal stories attributed to historically notable musicians. Lester Young had a language unto his own, and I know there are countless quotes of his that I have never heard of. It isn't my interest to share embarassing tales, just ones that are classic, ones that hurt no one, and that are humorous in nature. I know this could go anywhere, so maybe it shouldn't be limited to Lester? We all have probably read the Bill Crow anecdote book. Even then, if some from that book are shared here, what the hell. Here are a couple Lester anecdotes I keep hearing. 1) He is at a jam session (or a club date?) and a particular ryhthm section player wasn't making it. Lester was seated at the bar, when the offending player walks over and starts to schmooze Lester. He says "So Lester, when WAS the last time we played together?" Lester replies: "Tonight" 2) Lester was playing at the club in NYC that Pee Wee Marquette emceed at (the Half Note or the 5-Spot?). Pee Wee was reportedly very rude to musicians, and one evening he had been giving Lester particularly major grief. Lester lashed out at him saying: "Get out of my face, you half a mother-f***er!" 3) Lester turned to a drummer and advised him to play less on the crash cymbal and more on the ride cymbal, but in his own way. He asked him to give him more of the "titty cymbal" and less of the crash.
