  1. Last one....pic from my kid's modeling portfolio. Guys, she is only 14, so back way off!
  2. Me with the U of North Texas jazz faculty and Dave Douglas.
  3. Looking at the trombone like I am wondering why the hell I ever picked it up in the first place.
  4. Actually, I don't think they got very far with it 'cause I can only remember a dozen or two out of whack. The truth finally comes out! Yes, it was definitely my collection, but the weird thing is that they've never been cataloged - even (especially?) today - always been a fan of randomness and chance operations. Of course, it causes problems if I actually have to hunt for something specific... Damn that Bowman! Uhhhm, does this board provide whistle-blowers protection? B-)
  5. Well, if you're trombonist Dave Bowman, then we were roommates Bowman mentioned a roomate of his in Bruce Hall who had a rather large, well catalogued collection of LPs. He also mentioned a prank involving same. It seems that he and a cohort decided it would be cool (amusing?) to do a wholesale switcheroo, pulling the LPs out of the jackets and inserting them in other jackets, leaving the catalogued collection a total mess. I hope that wasn't your collection. And no, the cohort wasn't me either. I heard this tale years after the crime.
  6. Your memory's bad, J.D. - our paths crossed a few times at NT in the late 70s/early 80s, usually having something to do with one or both of the Babcock brothers, or with Conrad having shit stolen by people I was marginally associated with. However, I was in the process of leaving town, you were in the process of coming in, and we were both usually in no condition to remember anything, if you know what I mean... Then we played together at a rehearsal in Denton put together by guitarist Scott Whigham. You brough in a tune, I brought in one called "Only Their Ears Were Pink", and Scott had a bunch of unformed sketches. I think that Drew might have been there too, maybe Earl Harvin as well. Whatever, it was a mess... Well yeah, the chosen activities during that period of time didn't exactly contribute to the preservation of memory. I recall a few momentous highlights along the way... I do somehow recall that Whigham rehearsal, and yes it was -as most things that Drew was associated with - a mess. I do know Dave Bowman well, but he ain't me!
  7. JSangrey and family (dog too) Chuck Nessa/Mrs Nessa I heard Michael Weiss a few years ago when he played at Dallas 'Jazz Under the Stars' (I think in the company of Marchel Ivery) and perhaps I have on occasion been in the near proximity of other Dallas area board members at whatever jazz venue.....? I also understand that there are other ex-UNT guys in here (from the late 70's when Sangrey and I were there). I didn't actually meet Mr JS until a few years back when we did a musical thing together at the old Winedale Tavern.
  8. I have just bought a couple early Pete Christlieb LPs on Ebay. (paid more than I should have, but what the hell) Is anyone familiar with these? I am waiting for them to arrive. I am especially interested in the one with Warne Marsh.
  9. Found this 10" in a used record store awhile back. The Bronze Bickaroo in action!
  10. The New Glarus Yodel Club "Alpine Festival" Weird but kind of cool. It goes better with a tall Dunkel Weisen and a warm pretzel.
  11. Roswell Rudd just sent me a cd burn of a band that he spent some time with when he was in Africa. It is not the same band that he recorded with (Malicool). His notes aren't specific enough to determine what country, although I suspect it may still be Mali. This stuff is great....reminds me of Mexican pacific coast brass band music in a way, yet with African percussion. 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, tenor sax and many percussionists. Great compositions and fantastic musicianship. The band is essentially a family run operation. Their family name (I hope I am deciphering Roswell's handwriting correctly) is "Ahouandjinon". I have to believe that they have recorded commercially before; they are that tight and professional. On a couple tracks Roswell joins them for a rooftop rehearsal (which at one point is momentarily interrupted by roars from the local stadium football crowd as they reigned victorious over the Nigerian team!) I hope that he is able to "officially" record with them. I like this direction he has been taking. Very fresh. Update...google solved the mystery. The band is from Benin, and is called the Gangbe Brass Band. They do have CDs out. The one Roswell sent me is called "Whendo". His bonus tracks are the rooftop rehearsal.
  12. Nice setup, and that's a sweet guitar! I used to have a Roland JC-120 amp like that. I wish I still had it. I picked up the Roland a week after getting the Ibanez. I had been running my tele through a Line 6 2-10 amp, and it just was not a good amp for the Ibanez (which incidentally had been souped up with the addition of Seymour Duncans) This particular Roland is a newer generation amp, and it just isn't as quiet as the old ones were - or at least I think so. Is it normal to hear a hiss when no signal is going through the amp? I mean, it is powered up of course, and the gtr is plugged in, but even with the volume on the gtr dialed down, I hear hiss. It isn't that bad, but I guess I expected total silence. One other thing, the amp is a bitch to cart around; I am grateful for the casters.
  13. So was Bill Rank the name you were looking for? Bill Rank it is! Thanks again everyone for throwing in on this.
  14. Thanks one and all for all the info. This website is priceless!
  15. During a break between Easter gig services, we were discussing music from the 20's. The conversation came around to the Whiteman band.. A specific question was posed about a trombonist from Ohio who was in the band during that era, and was seen still gigging in Cincinnati into his 80's (back in the mid-1970s or so). None of us could come up with any names. Any ideas? Are there some books available that would give detailed information about who was playing in the band then? An online data base? Aside from the notable soloists such as Beiderbeck, Teagarden, Venuti, Trumbauer, et al I draw blanks. I see nothing in the Simon Big Band book. Thanks!
  16. I always run across copies of that first LP in used bins, and for years I have wondered if it was any good. Question is, where is he now?
  17. and if he doesn't return, the better off baseball is.
  18. It is my understanding that steroids don't have any impact on one's ability at the plate (meaning the eye for the ball, bat speed) aside from power. The biggest impact that 'roids have is on the body's ability to heal quicker, hence users can play more...(ie sit out less), and the more times at bat equal more chances to pad stats. That is still cheating.
  19. Is anyone here familiar with the organist Ron Feuer, and this LP?
  20. Q) What does Michael Jackson have in common with Shamu? A) Both are black AND white and live in theme parks (and if you sit too close, you may get sprayed). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael Jackson and Tanya Harding are new partners in the horse racing field; she handles handicaps, and he rides the 4 year olds. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q) What is the difference between Michael Jackson and a greyhound racing dog? A) The greyhound will wait for the hares/hairs to come out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A man was seated at the bar, drinking slowly but looking very sad. Bartender: "what's wrong, buddy?" Man: "Well, last night I got home from work early, and I walked in on my wife having sex with my best friend on our couch" Bartender: "Wow, that's rough! What did you say to her?" Man: "I told her we were through, and that I wanted her ass out of there ASAP" Bartender: "I don't blame you one bit! What did you say to your best friend?" Man: "I leaned way down until I could look him straight in the eye, and I said 'BAD DOG, BAD DOG'" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Of course everyone has heard about the new saxophone terrorsist group. Kenny G-had
  21. And the flugel got its name in Germany. Basically it translates to "wing horn" (As in Flughafen = airport). In traditional marching bands in Germany, they were positioned on the wings of the unit. (the edge I assume)
