  1. Does anyone know what the @*$& deal is with the upcoming batch(es) of RVGs at CDUniverse?

Free Form, Goin' West, Ready for Freddie, Right Now, and Sweet Honey Bee all show release on 3/9.

Byrd's At The Half Note Cafe has slipped to 3/23.

Newk's Time, Cape Verdean Blues, Prayer Meetin', Rockin' the Boat all show release on 3/23.

Conquistador and Never Let Me Go show release on 3/26....a Friday??

Edit: according to this page on the Blue Note site, the CDUniverse information seems to be correct for the 3/9 batch. Interesting...the five mentioned above appear on the new releases page, but SHB is missing from the RVG page.

  2. My wife wants me to sell many of my CDs so we could put a down payment on a house. Even though I purchased most of my music before I was married, I think she resents it. At least once a month, I get the "If you sold your CDs, you'd have $(insert large amount here).

I would have never considered getting rid of music before, but now I'm in the place where I just don't have the space for it. I figure about half of my CDs are still in boxes from my move a year ago.

    How about a compromise....

You'll sell a CD (or x CDs) for every pair of shoes SHE sells. ;)

  3. Cash Family Draws Line Around 'Ring of Fire'

    Thursday, February 19, 2004

It may be an obvious match-up, but Johnny Cash's classic "Ring of Fire" won't be used to sell hemorrhoid-relief cream anytime soon.

The Tennessean of Nashville first reported late last month that a Florida TV production company wanted to pitch the idea of using the classic song in a commercial for Preparation H or similar products.

Merle Kilgore, who wrote the 1964 hit with Cash's wife, June Carter Cash , told the newspaper he was mightily amused by the idea when the production company called him. After all, he used to mock-dedicate the song "to the makers of Preparation H" whenever he played the song live.

But Cash's daughter Rosanne said she and her siblings were less fired up.

"There is no way we will ever let that happen," Rosanne Cash told the newspaper. "We would never allow the song to be demeaned like that."

The script for the commercial would have featured Kilgore's own rendition of the song, not Cash's, but the Cash children still hold veto power through June Carter Cash's songwriting credit.

"He [Kilgore] started talking about this moronic tie-in without talking to any of us," Rosanne Cash added. "The song is about the transformative power of love and that's what it has always meant to me and that's what it will always mean to the Cash children."

June Carter Cash died a few months before her husband last year.

"I certainly didn't want to upset the Cash family because I love them," said Kilgore, who now manages Hank Williams Jr. "I just thought it was kind of funny."

"Ring of Fire" may not be associated with hemorrhoids, but the Out There editors definitely remember it being used in a British TV ad for very spicy foods a few years ago.

  4. I pre-ordered this batch of RVGs when they first came available at CDUniverse at the original/higher prices. Although not automatic, as with Amazon pre-orders, CDUniverse did upate my order with the new/lower prices after I sent them an email.

  5. Well I guess Freddie wasn't ready afterall. I just went back to CDUniverse to check on the status of RFR and it had changed from "back ordered" to "no longer available."

I'll keep checking as the street date approaches to see if it gets added back, but my guess is we'll see 5 titles in the March 9th batch not 6.

  6. The March 9th RVGs are available for pre-order at CD Universe.

Donald Byrd - At The Half Note Cafe Vols. 1& 2 - 2 CDs

    Donald Byrd - Free Form

    Grant Green - Goin' West

Freddie Hubbard - Ready For Freddie

    Jackie McLean - Right Now

Duke Pearson - Sweet Honey Bee

    Interesting notes:

The Hubbard shows Backordered since 2/6/2004 for $11.79

All other single discs show Pre-Order Now! Available: Tuesday, March 09, 2004 for $9.05

    The double Byrd is $20.25.

Seems like a slight price increase from the last pre-order....wasn't it something like $8.39...?

Also, no Rivers RVG is currently (02/06) listed Fuchsia Swing Song or otherwise.

  7. Received both this morning been listening to them in the background all day long. I was trying to expand my tastes with this purchase as West Coast, or cool jazz isn't my usual thing. I had no prior experience with theses artists as leaders.

I've been happily surprised by these two sets.

First off, no quality control issues here. YEA!!

Everything is top notch. Both sets really swing. The sound quality is very good, even on the live sessions.

I can't wait to get them home and give them a proper audition.

If you know these guys and love the west coast thing, you've gotta grab 'em. Or if you're like me and willing to venture beyond bop, this is good way to do it.

    :tup:tup

  8. Let's take this a different direction...

How about jazz songs that should NEVER be used in advertising.

I'll start. Coltrane's A Love Supreme - used in a Taco Bell ad

I can just hear it, "Taco Supreme, Taco Supreme, Taco Supreme, TaCO Supreme"

    Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrg!!!!
