Reading about Skyline, it the early 70s it seemed that maybe they recruited various talents from other schools. If my friends had Hardee as a teacher (and they certainly appeared to have) perhaps they had him at Holmes before transferring to Skyline? They were both trumpeters/school band people.

That's likely. You could go to Skyline from anywhere in the city - either half the day or full time.

John Hardee at Skyline in Dallas!

Didn't know about that. Having gone to Skyline 1973-1976 I never heard his name mentioned there. However I came across this:

"In the late 1940s he moved back to Texas and taught school in Wichita Falls until 1955, when he settled in Dallas. There he held a teaching position at Oliver Wendell Holmes High School until his retirement in 1976. Hardee gave his last performance at the Nice Jazz Festival in France in 1975. He died in Dallas on May 18, 1984."

You sound so great, Michael !

And Lou back then. I like that stuff much more than the later organ featured quartets. I´m sure that rhythm-changes tune might be "Wee" though you don´t hear the theme that was standard program of Lou. That´s first rate be-bop, your piano, Lou´s alto.....

    Thank´s for sharing.

Thanks Gheorghe. That melody Lou plays at the end is not Wee. It's something else.

  5. Lou Donaldson played an unaccompanied "Thanks For the Memory" at Johnny Griffin's memorial.

Carol Sloane singing "Isn't It a Pity" accompanied by Roland Hanna at Tommy Flanagan's memorial.

I played at a lot of memorial services but a couple stand out: playing "Easy to Remember" with Joe Wilder, Buster Williams, and Tootie Heath at Percy Heath's memorial at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, and playing "Saturn" at John Gilmore's.

It was this past Sunday night. The Michael Weiss Trio did one night at the Century Club here in Tucson.

Michael was joined by a local rhythm section of Scott Black on bass, and Arthur Vint on drums.

I thoroughly enjoyed hearing Weiss in person. He played with great taste and swung like mad.

The only other times I have seen Michael Weiss live was 1987 in Rochester,NY  with  Johnny Griffin, and in 1996 in Vail, Colorado also with Griffin.

I spoke a bit with Michael on Sunday night, and he was the one who was able to recall the specific years when I had previously heard him play live.

Great to see you Peter. The Rochester club I played with Griff was called Calabash.

Wow - your copy of the Montmartre tapes must be way lower generation than what I received 20+ years ago.

FWIW he doesn't stretch out like what was captured back when, this is about a seven minute rendition of "Summertime" and verified not included on those recordings.

Can't wait to hear it nonetheless.

  10. Heard him with Miles in 1974. Was amazed (as a sixteen year old) at the telepathy going on, how he had his eyes closed when Miles was flashing his hand signals like a catcher to pitcher. He came out a few times to gigs I played with Jimmy. In 1994 we recorded soundtrack to an episode of the cop show NY Undercover, Mtume was producing. A good experience to have. Of course we did Gingerbread Boy.
