  2. Welcome to the UK, Nico! Access to Spotify is one of the few things it's got to recommend it these days! Still, I guess you'll get a good deal for your euros! love spotify! big advantage compared with deezer is that there is so much of the emi catalogue (also some enjas)... also much better (though still not sufficient) discographical information... but deezer has more universal stuff, jazz in paris, mps, ojcs (much more gene ammons iirc) but luckily for this week i can have both... having a great time here i hope, already listened to hank mobley's a slice of the top, had some great indian food and took a walk one a spooky looking cemetery at night... Take care! What city are you in? Thanks for the Spotify/Deezer comparison; I must give Deezer a try sometime. It's just that I'm somewhat overwhelmed by Spotify's abundance of riches at the moment!
  3. I read a Hemingway biography a few years ago and seem to remember that his first reporting job at the age of 18 or 19 was with the Kansas City Star in 1917-18 and that he frequented clubs where jazz was already being played. I don't recall any references to a continuing liking for the music later in life.

  5. Well, that's Spotify for you! Thanks for introducing it to the board. Now playing: Oliver Nelson, Fantabulous Just realised I have Fantabulous in the Mosaic box, so have cut it and moved to Sonny Stitt, New York Jazz. Far too much on Spotify to listen to stuff that's already in my collection! I guess I'm using it to expand my knowledge of the music!

  11. Ralph Lalama Quartet, Energy Fields Have been interested in this guy since he stood up in the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra at the Wigan Jazz Festival in 1989 and took a solo that blew me away. You can hear the sort of thing I mean on "Lester Left Town" on the Orch's Soft Lights and Hot Music.
  12. Frank Kermode Tom and Jerry Jordan
  13. Bill Evans, The Interplay Sessions This repackaging includes tracks I've never heard before.
  14. Further evidence of the Getz/Mulligan affinity can be heard on Together for the First Time (Fresh Sound), where Stan subs for Gerry in the classic Mulligan Quartet at the Haig. He fits perfectly with Chet Baker, Carson Smith and Larry Bunker, adopting a very similar role to that of the absent leader. Mind you, as he sticks to tenor, I did miss the wide trumpet/baritone range which normally distinguished the quartet.
  15. Still listening to this compendium of Herman tracks, recorded live at the Lagoon in Salt Lake City, the band in very good form. Two points of particular interest to me: Britain's finest export, Victor Feldman, featured on vibes on quite a few numbers. Could this have been his first recording date in the US? And Randy's Dad is on this one, tho' I'm insufficiently knowledgeable to distinguish Arno's solos from the two other Four Brothers-style tenorists on the date, Richie Kamuca and Bob Hardaway.
  16. Captain Birdseye Alfred Hitchcock Walter Gropius
  17. Def Leppard Amelia Earhart Georges Hearing
  18. Dexter Gordon as actor: Round Midnight, etc. Philly Joe Jones as comedian: Dracula routine. Stan Levey as photographer. Monk as dancer?
