I very much enjoy the music of multi-reedman Alan Barnes, who plays quite often in this part of the world. I saw him last month in a quintet with Bruce Adams on trumpet and am due to see him again on Monday with Jim Hart on vibes. Alan is a highly entrepreneurial individual who has his own record label, Woodville, on which you can hear him and many kindred spirits, such as Scott Hamilton, Warren Vache, Harry Allen, Mark Nightingale, Dave Cliff and Martin Drew. Unusually, he is a musician I know better from live gigs than from recordings. Does anyone have any recommendations from Woodville Records?

Yes, couldn't get Organissimo at about 8:30 a.m. GMT and during the morning. Was OK again when I tried after 5p.m.

Have now bought the OJC Farmer Quartet with Gryce and, I agree, it has the edge on When Farmer Met Gryce, partly due to the very swinging presence of Philly Joe Jones , who by this time (late 1955) was truly on form and with the classic Miles Davis Quintet. Thanks for the recommendation.Gryce was a big (one of the biggest) discovery for me during '07, though I'd of course been familiar with Monk's Music. I also find him an excellent arranger, and am inclined to get any album featuring Gryce for that reason.Meaning to read the bio mentioned above (very interesting life story), but haven't gotten around to it.
Mal-1 (Waldron), with Gryce and which I recommend, just so happens to be playing now. In case you don't have it yet, I strongly recommend the Art Farmer Quintet (OJC) with Gigi Gryce; slightly prefer this to When Farmer Met Gryce, though both are excellent. I have ethical problems re. purchasing Lonehill and that ilk, but the OJC Jazz Lab album I have is primo.

My daughter gave me for Christmas a calendar called Covering Jazz: Twelve Classic Album Covers. I'm looking forward to turning over tomorrow to Eric Dolphy in Europe, Vol 2.

For recorded jazz: c.1945-1965; i.e. from the outset of bop recording to the end of the "jazz boom".

He is one of the driving forces behind the current Gerald Wilson Orchestra, proving that he also is a superb big band drummer.
Yes, he was very good when I saw him some years ago with the Carla Bley Orchestra.

Count Basie, Dance Sessions (Jasmine)
A 44 track, 2 CD recent UK re-issue of classic Basie material from 1952-54.
Is this one a Mosaic Basie Clef ripoff?
Dunno.

Looks tasty Bill but I didn't enjoy it anywhere near as much as the earlier Riversides. If I remember it sounded rather too casual for my taste - but it a long time since owned it. Found the same applied to most of the 'silver' Xanadus.
I only had a sample track on some Xanadu anthology, but these were my thoughts exactly!
Looks like the majority verdict is "Don't buy"!

Thanks for the tip, John. £26.85 is a lotta money!

I am a big fan of all the Jimmy Heath albums on Riverside. However, my favorite Jimmy Heath recording is the quartet date he did on Xanadu. It was re-issued on CD on the Prevue label with the title PICTURE OF HEATH.
Heath plays tenor throughout with the great rhythm section of Barry Harris, Sam Jones, and Billy Higgins.
The quartet plays 5 tunes written by Heath plus one standard as follows.
For Minors Only, Body And Soul, Picture Of Heath, Bruh' Slim, All Members, CTA.
Looks very tasty! Unfortunately, amazon uk wants £26.85 for a used copy!

Time to repeat the well-known Al Cohn story?
Al mentioned at Charlie's Tavern one day that he'd just finished an album with 24 mandolin players. Someone asked, "Where did they find that many mandolin players?"
"Well," said Al, "all day today you couldn't get a haircut in Jersey City."

Most unusually, BBC 4's schedule last night read like this:
8.30 Brecon Jazz Festival 2007: Humphrey Lyttelton: Who Else But Humph? New series. The history of the popular music event.
9.0 Legends: Ella Fitzgerald. The jazz singer's life and work.
10.0 Oscar Peterson: Jazz 625. A re-edited performance by the pianist who died on December 23.
10.25 In Concert: Oscar Peterson. A 1974 performance.
10.55 Oscar Peterson: Words and Music. Part of Oscar Peterson Night.
11.40 Oscar Peterson: Omnibus. Part of Oscar Peterson Night.
What sort of coverage does jazz get from television in your area?
