  2. Four television moments stick in my mind: Alcoholic playwright Brendan Behan staggering out of the studio muttering, "Where's the gents?" during an interview by the pompous Malcolm Muggeridge. The equally pompous David Dimbleby being taken apart by James Baldwin during an interview. Marcel Duchamp, the iconic art world figure, being interviewed by Joan Bakewell ("the thinking man's crumpet"). The declining Billie Holliday singing live on television during her final months.

  4. Jazz Record Requests Usual far-ranging show: from ODJB to Geri Allen so far. BTW whatever happened to Geoffrey Smith? Not on this weekend. Has he had the heave-ho already? When they gave him the graveyard slot of Sunday midnight to 1, they probably expected him to lose most of his septuagenarian audience through early bedtimes and lack of computer access (internet use among over 65s in the UK = 30%). P.S. I was wrong. He's back next week with a "special Olympic-themed edition!!! Suggestions for this show? I can only think of "Runnin' Wild". P.P.S. New boy on JRR Alyn Shipton has been treated quite well so far, but has just announced a 5:15 start next week "because of the Proms". Will he go the way of Geoffrey?

  6. Do you have any inside information How are they going to portray your National story If the stories are to be believed there will be lots of green/rustic stuff, a mini-Glastonbury Tor, cricket, simulated non-stop rain and pens full of sheep being herded - plus 'nurses' pushing hospital trollies round the track I take it you won't be watching it on the TV then Bill?.. Right first time, Sidewinder!
