  1. Just started The Elegance of the Hedgehog today, but I prefer the American the cover - the girl in moccasins - and quite like the title. That's what makes prize fights, right?

A couple sweet quotes so far:

"I think lucidity gives your success a bitter taste, whereas mediocrity still leaves hope for something."

"What is an aristocrat? A woman who is never sullied by vulgarity, although she may be surrounded by it,"

  2. Caught my usual Thursday night gig last night - Lezlie Harrison at Sweet Rhythm. I love her voice so much - have I mentioned that? Really can sing. The degree to which she's grown over the last few years of hitting there weekly never fails to astonish me. Also love her Hammond C3 player, Greg Lewis.

It was a little sad though, in that they're closing the club - for good this time. Anyone ever catch Bu there?

Of course from when it opened as a jazz club - it'd been a health food restaurant - in the mid-70s til about 2001 it was Sweet Basil...

  4. years ago I played for William Styron's birthday party up somewhere in Connecticut (had Harold Danko on piano) - when in walked Mia Farrow. This was not long after her famous battle with a famous comedian over an affair and child custody.

I said to the band - how about we play "Woody 'n You" ?

    they refused -

    allen the terrible!

  5. Both Dick Katz albums and the Gil Evans are tough to find. No one is even selling the Gil Evans on amazon; the Katzs are $30 a pop.

Picked up Dream of You, HM w CB, Jelena and You've Got a Date though.

  6. The question seems backward to me.

Instead of asking why are contemporary audiences wallowing in old music surely we should we be asking why contemporary musicians are not making music to attract contemporary audiences.

I think the question largely hinges on production. The great 50s and 60s BN albums SOUND GOOD, whereas digitized jazz doesn't breathe. I love to go hear new jazz live, but must say that I find precious few albums translate the experience of live music into anything I'm compelled to buy.
