  1. You should pick up "The New Miles Davis Quintet", the first recording this group released. BTW, if you can find them for a reasonable price, the DCC gold CD versions of these dates sound phenomenal. You should be able to pick up "The New Miles Davis Quintet" on a DCC gold CD for less than $25 these days. Somebody on the Hoffman forums has a copy for $22 right now. Later, Kevin Philly Joe is my hero in music period!! Wynton Kelly's Kelly At Midnight is some of my favorite Philly Joe! The guy could do anything. Brush playing was incredible, he had a big poppin beat and the way he hit those drums were special. His playing came from the Charles Wilcoxin books. Very rudimentally based! Studied with Cozy Cole and Klook and was such an innovator. His playing on all those Blue Notes in the 50's early 60's and the stuff with Miles of course always leaves me speechless! My all time favorite!!
  2. Freddie had a certain fire that made your hair stand up and send chills down your spine. I've been playing along to Goin Up a lot lately. He's SO KILLIN on that one!! The guy played with incredible conviction and creativity. RIP Freddie!
  3. Thanks James! We had a blast recording that CD. Joe was real proud of it as we all were.
  4. Joe gave me my first jazz gigs when I was 16. I was honored to spend countless hours on the bandstand with him. I was also very honored to play on his only CD recording THIS IS THE MOMENT. I learned so much from Joe and he was a great friend as well. I saw him a few weeks ago and we was in pretty good spirits. I spoke to his wife Judy this morning and she said he really went down fast. He will be greatly missed. Joe plays incredible on Sam's Act One. Every one of his solos is a gem on that record. Thanks a thousand times to my musical father Joe Romano.
  5. Great to hear from you Peter! Thanks so much for buying my CDs! I hope you like this one. Playing with Moody is always great! That was fun. I miss you and your record collection and table at the shows here. I hope all is well with you and please keep in touch!
  6. I said the CD features TUNES by Sonny Clark, Hank Mobley, Tadd Dameron NOT Sonny Clark, Hank Mobley and Tadd playing on it.
