The first Sambalanço Trio CD should be the easiest of their recordings to find. It was released on CD twice- on Bomba (Japan), and also on Ubatuqui (Spain). Dusty G is likely to restock it (I think you can ask to be notified when it comes in), I would think. The Ubatuqui version might even still be had at a well-stocked Tower Records store (I know they used to carry it... not sure about other stores)... or maybe Tower online?

Now that S.W.A.T. Has finally made it to DVD

To my surprise, I stumbled onto two boxed sets today, while at one of my favorite CD shops that also has videos. A total of 8 DVD's, including the first 32 episodes. -
Has the Mosaic site been down since the weekend...

Hmmm... I just noticed on the (original Sparton) inner sleeve, it says "Sparton of Canada limited - London Ontario - Famous for sound since 1926 / records / television / stereo hi fi phonos / radios". London Ontario is about 100 miles across the border from Jackson Michigan, where the above radios were manufactured...

A few details about my Fuller... Foldout jacket is identical to an Impulse (including the Impulse logo in the white circle), but has "Sparton" stamped at the top of the front cover in gold script. (Not labeled Sparton on spine nor on rear cover). Aforementioned red abel says "SPARTON impulse RECORDS". "RVG" stamp in dead wax. B-)

Not to be confused with the american company that made these: (BTW, that's not a "Bluebird", which was a table model, but a "Nocturne"- a 4-foot-high masterpiece now worth upwards of $30,000) This is a Bluebird. Probably more info than anybody wanted, but I couldn't resist...

I have a Sparton issue of Curtis Fuller's "Soul Trombone (The Jazz Clan)". Mine is mono (red label, gold lettering). I always thought it sounded great.

Welcome, Mr. Bassman. The more the merrier!

Well, I voted. I had to say it's a tie between Harpo & Chico. I like Groucho, but he never got to me like H & C. Maybe it's because I got acquainted with their movies when I was a kid. Groucho's humor is more sophisticated/adult in nature. I always liked the scenes with Harpo and Chico the best... especially Harpo... can I change my vote? I'll take Chico's piano over Harpo's harp any day, though.
-
I thought of that (seriously), but I thought the tie joke was funnier. Maybe we should vote on that, too.

Across the room.

My first attempt at a poll, and I can't even decide how I'm voting.

SUGAN (actually 8304... SPELLBOUND was 8303) was issued on NJ in '63, and on Status in '65, I believe. As far as I know, there were about 25 titles issued on Status, from the aforementioned 8303 up to the Coltrane/Wess WHEELIN' AND DEALIN' (8327). Most were reissues of Prestige and NJ, but there were a couple of reissues of Tru-Sound, and Moodsville albums. SUGAN is kind of an odd duck. Besides being reissued on a different label, it's never been clear to me whose date that was. Some books say "Red Garland with Phil Woods", others say "Phil Woods with Red Garland"; and the Prestige discography lists it as the former in the index, while it's listed as the latter in the main discography section. Fantasy lists it under Woods' name in their catalog. The cover makes it appear more like Woods was the leader:

Well, well, well. I deserved to get stumped on this. I can't quite say I've been meaning to buy this particular disc, but I've been meaning to find out why so many people- usually in-the-know people (there's no people like in-the-know people, like no people I know) (sorry)- talk about this guy when the subject of great trombonists comes up. I've been putting that off... for about 20 years. I'm serious, and I have no idea why. Makes no sense to me, either. I just listened again, and it occurs to me that while I don't love his note choices in stating the melody (a very important factor for me), and I'm not too crazy about the vibrato at times, I do love the tension he creates with his phrasing. All of the short phrases with their somewhat subdued energy set you (me) up for those little climaxes that he throws in every once in awhile. Basically, it's just refreshing to hear somebody playing the trombone a different way. As I said above, I like it. To think of all the $%#@ing OJC sales where I've bypassed this... Another very appealing thing about this disc (besides the fact that it's an OJC that is widely overlooked, it seems) is that this is a tremendous assemblage (or "gathering", in case I butchered the spelling of "assemblage") of talent. The pianist is another artist whom I've been putting off really getting acquainted with, and I KNOW that I'm foolish for putting these things off. Bottom line- GREAT choice for a blindfold track. Thanks for the kick in the rear end, Mr. Storer.

Well, I had a lot more trouble with this disc than disc 1 (not that disc 1 was a piece o' cake either...) Disc 2: 1. Well-executed, cohesive, harshly real, very emotive... but NMT™. Listenable, but I have no real urge to hear it again. 2. Sonny Rollins trio doing “St. Thomas” before a live audience. Sound quality is not very good, which makes me wonder if this was not a commercially-released item. Sonny has no doubt played this tune hundreds (thousands?) of times, and yet he sounds very inspired here. Strange how it ends during the percussion solo. 3. “Straight no chaser”, live recording. Sounds a little bit like it was recorded on a portable cassette machine in the audience. The pianist reminds me of Tyner at times. The guitarist is fairly talented, showing the influence of Wes (which is like saying “that tenor player sounds like he was influenced by Coltrane”), and a bit of George Benson. He’s a little sloppy at times, and not really distinctive to my ears, which makes me wonder if he’s a very well-known player. Nice vibes solo, but I couldn’t say who. That bass sounds odd somehow... like a bass guitar with the treble turned way up. 4. “Bye bye blackbird”, morphing into “Naima” near the end. From time to time I’ve seen people post things like “this might have been fun to hear in person, but hearing a recording of it isn’t all that exciting”. I get that sort of feeling here. Out of the context of the “vibe” of this particular show, this is kind of hard for me to get into. Kind of long, and loose to my ears. 5. I can’t really get into this. At least not yet. 6. More enjoyable than the previous track, but still NMT™.

Okay, our garage sale is over, so here's the stuff I wrote a few days ago... First of all, thanks again to Tom for putting together these two discs of interesting music. Nice variety, and very challenging! Disc 1: 1. A harmonically advanced take on Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “My Favorite Things”. A little too harmonically advanced for my taste, but interesting nonetheless. I couldn’t even hazard a guess as to who’s playing. 2. I don’t have much knowledge or experience with this type of jazz. Could this be a Johnny Dodds group? Just a guess. I don’t recognize the tune. The fidelity almost made me feel like this could be a more modern recording than the period the style represents. 3. Track 3 4. “Taking a chance on love”. I like this a bit more than track one in terms of style. Not sure yet who this could be... 5. “It might as well be spring”. Hmm, sounds like a trombone, although not so obviously at times. Very precise and controlled approach to phrasing, more staccato than the usual trombone approach. Interesting, and I must say I like it. This player doesn’t strike me as very “bluesy”, and I’m not recognizing any personal characteristics here from trombonists I’m familiar with. This player’s vibrato, combined with the other stylistic elements, makes me wonder if this is an oldtimer of sorts (someone from the pre-bebop era, or someone younger who focuses on that era). Sounds like a fairly modern recording, at least on first spin. I’m stumped... 6. Track 6 I have some mixed feelings about this singer. I like (and can be quite moved by) the sound of his voice some of the time, and it irritates me at other times. I could say the same about his phrasing. I don’t think he’ll ever be a favorite, but tracks like this help me to warm to him more. 7. Ah, the old Roberta Flack tune from my high school days... “Killing me softly (with his song)”. I think I’ve heard this a couple of times as a jazz vehicle, but this may be the nicest version I’ve heard. I may have heard this version, in fact, but I’m sure I don’t own it. Very lovingly played, no nonsense, just enough improv here to keep it interesting. 8. This doesn’t sound familiar to me at all, but it’s tasty. Not as straight ahead as the stuff I usually listen to, but a nice change of pace for someone like me who isn’t extremely adventurous. I don’t love this, but I’m very content to listen to it. Like I said, tasty. And mysterious. One of the things I really like about these BFT’s. Even if I never buy this, I’m glad I got to hear it. No guesses. 9. My reaction to this is similar to the previous track. It’s very listenable, although not really my thing. This sounds like 1980’s or ‘90’s to me, in the general category of things inspired by the late ‘60’s Blue Note era. I think I liked track 8 better, only because that had a “peaceful” vibe that I dug. This sounds a bit more familiar in terms of style, and therefore had less mystery/adventure for me. Not boring, but far more familiar in terms of style. 10. The tune reminds me of “Them there eyes”, but sounds like it could be something slightly different. Actually, I listened again, and I think it may indeed be that tune, with a few liberties taken with the melody. This sounds like a “retro” performance, like track 2. A 1930’s style tune, probably recorded in the relatively recent past. 11. Now this sounds like a vintage recording... 1940’s? The tenor reminds me of Hawkins in terms of sound, but that’s not narrowing things down much. I think I need to spend some more time on this one. 12. “All the things you are”. I’ve never delved into this style much, and I know there are some major players that I’m relatively ignorant about. I’m thinking this might be something by (or inspired by) Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh (two greats that I have never been inspired to explore very far). 13. Is that “Lester leaps in”? This player is a little out for my taste, and outside my realm of familiarity. I can hear the connection to Sonny Rollins, but I’m not qualified to make a good guess as to who this is.

Didn't think of that. It worked. All data looks perfect (naturally, as I assembled it in the first place ). Thanks.

Why do you have to ask me such a tough question- I'm confused enough as it is! Hmm, I downloaded the program off the net, and it has its own folder in the applications folder on my hard drive. I don't see it listed as a plug-in in any of my browser folders. The Acrobat Reader program opens automatically when I click on your pdf link, but I get only the menu bar in A.R., and a new IE window that comes up blank. It has worked for me in opening online pdf files since I downloaded it a few months ago. I'm on a Mac, BTW.

Odd... usually the album index appears immediately following the session listings in the discography. I'm not at all familiar with that music or that set... is it possible that a lot of that music was previously unissued? The reason I ask is that in the online Kenton discography page that I found ( http://kenton.crispen.org/discography.html ), there were only two LP's referenced in correlation to another CD issue of (at least some of) this music; and zero LP data given in correlation to the Mosaic. The original Capitol LP's listed in correlation to another album titled "Kenton Showcase: The Music of Bill Holman and Bill Russo" were Capitol T-598; and W-524. I can't find any info on T-598, but W-524 (titled "Kenton Showcase") was a 1955 12" reissue of two 10" LP's- H-525 ("Kenton Showcase: The Music of Bill Russo") and H-526 ("Kenton Showcase: The Music of Bill Holman"). That's about all I can dig up at the moment...

Skipping Tony's question for the moment (I don't have the Kenton, Holman, Russo set- #136... haven't managed to find the discog on the Mosaic site... and the online Kenton discogs don't seem to include that album index info). So, if anyone has that set... Now for the Basie Studio question... The arrangers include the following, and their initials are given after the name of each track that they arranged (if they were also the composer, the designation is "a/c"). The tracks with "vJW" and "vIR" indicate vocals by Joe Williams or Irene Reid.
