  2. totally agreed w/ fasstrack and jsangry re: Cable Guy. crazy underrated gem. and yeah, Carrey was excellent in it and hilarious. while i don't wanna take anything away from Carrey (i'm a fan...), in that particular role a large part of why he was so successful was that he was playing off of the always perfect (almost always anyways...) Matthew Broderick. he's one of the best "straight man" players i can think of in film. in Election, You Can Count On Me, and The Cable Guy, all excellent films, he plays something of a milquetoast character caught/trapped in a situation not necessarily of his own making. he plays this perfectly every time and allows the more 'colorful' characters to use him as a springboard.

and since i'm here, imo maybe the worst comedy i've seen in recent memory is It's Complicated. it was insulting, simplistic, stereotypical wannabe dramedy. worst of all, it was nearly completely unfunny. i think i laughed lightly maybe once. the film pissed me off actually and i remember leaving the theater angry.

  3. I first became familiar with his playing via the album "Tough Young Tenors" released back in 1991. It also featured James Carter, Walter Blanding, Herb Harris and Todd Williams. Any thoughts on his solo issues or sideman dates? Anything worth purchasing? I see that Terell Stafford played on a few of his sessions which interests me.

i remember enjoying some of his playing (and the music generally) on Nicholas Payton's Payton Place. the two tracks that were wearing their "Davis 2nd great quintet" tendencies on their sleeves were my favorite tracks: Concentric Circles and Paraphernalia. it's been quite a while since i thought of that record...

  4. Thanks for posting these! I was in the audience. This was last Thursday in Paris. Great concert!

During the 5/4 number shown in the first clip I turned to my buddy as KR was comping during the Scofield solo and said "Kurt Rosenwinkel in the role of Dave Brubeck." At one point I also characterized it as "Dave Brubeck meets the Allman Brothers." ;-)

Another person who was there told me he had taken his wife, who isn't that much of a jazz fan. She said she thought it was good but "why does Scofield have to make jazz faces?"

i'm jealous! this new clip below made me smile even bigger than the 1st two i posted above. what a beautiful thing (the trading fours/twos especially...):

  5. I doubt she is worried about proving how good she is. Perhaps she is doing exactly what she wants. Maybe this is music is moving her at this time in her life. Just because well versed jazz listeners and musicians prefer to hear her in a specific context does not mean that it would inspire her. Even if it is a commercial effort, who could blame her for considering how she might make an effort to help insure the future of her family?

    :tup :tup

even though i'm one of the folks who "prefer to hear her in a specific context," i totally agree w/ your post. way to go...

  6. this amazing, beautiful performance will always be my favorite of his:

I'm seeing a playlist of 26 movie trailers.

hey Jim R. it's an embedded vid from youtube of the trailer for Marty. works ok for me. not sure what's up. if others also have trouble i'll delete. just wanted to share a taste of my favorite Borgnine film...

  7. I have a couple of her CD's and the Paris DVD. I think she's fine, but I can take her or leave her. What I don't understand is why she allows herself to be sold as a sex symbol first and and a musician second. I don't know squat about marketing, but that strikes me strongly as putting the cart ahead of the horse.

i can see your point. but from where i sit, it's easy to understand how someone could allow themselves to be marketed in a manipulative way if they find out it can generate a lot of money for themselves. not saying it's right, just understandable.

  8. Glad Rag Doll - You can here a track on Verve's soundcloud - produced by T Bone Burnett, it will feature Marc Ribot, Bryan Sutton, Colin Linden, bassist Dennis Crouch, drummer Jay Bellerose, and keyboarder Keefus Green. After hearing the sample, I'm not quite convinced that she will convince me with that style ...

nothing to write home about. always good to hear Ribot though :excited: and partly due to that, this sounds like it coulda been a T. Waits backing track w/ his vocal taken out and Krall taking her turn. Waits karaoke. the results being similar to Krall's earlier cover of the Waits classic "Heart Of Saturday Night." mainly ok but forgettable.

by the way, i'm no Krall hater. i think she's a good singer and in the right context an excellent pianist. my favorite recording of hers is still her debut Steppin' Out. a very good record...

  9. However, one four-dot review is allowed to stand while the other isn't. A half-dot might not seem like much, but it's quite a difference in my opinion. The Charles Gayle from a while back is another example - I submitted it as a five, and it was given a four,

agreed. it only seems like "not much" to someone not following the logic thru. using a 5 star system, deleting a full star as they did to your Gayle review, represents a 20% difference. that is huge.

I can't speak for you, but if it were I, I'd tell the editor to leave my ratings intact or sayonara.

i'd do the same. it makes no sense and is wildly rude to the writer who spends their time getting things as they want them. they should either use the rating submitted by the reviewer or not use the rating system at all. if the ratings i submitted were consistently altered without my permission i'd be pretty damn angry...

i've written for a few places and only one of them (Blurt-online.com) used a rating system. they never altered any of my ratings or words. my one review printed in STN had no rating and AAJ had no rating systems while i was writing for them; though they messed w/ words a bit (but in a pretty professional way...).

  10. just knowing this is happening makes me glad to be alive. i assume other guitarists on the board here may have a similar listening trajectory: Scofield has been a personal hero of mine since the early 80s, and Rosenwinkel has been my favorite musician for the last 10 years. this is just such a beautiful thing. something of a "Return Of The Son Bass Desires." the set up within the band is kinda cool too; ie - Sco has his longtime foil in Stewart and Ben Street (amazing bassist...) has been tight w/ Rosenwinkel regularly since about 2000. cool dynamic. kind of "two of a perfect pair." it ties together a 30 year arc of music listening in my life. it was actually pretty emotional for me to watch these vids. seeing these guys play together is, for me, like pure joy. that doesn't happen too often...

i wish i could see it live but the schedule doesn't look like i'll be able to. if anyone here on the board sees it please post a review for us :tup:excited:

  11. Geez, 75 responses, and not a single vote for "Some Like It Hot", which is usually at the top of Best Comedy lists...

It's a great film and a great comedy, and a better film than most mentioned, but it's not necessarily as funny as many of the others, I mean in a belly laugh way.

bingo, Pete. hit the nail on the head.

and talk about actual lol, that clip you put up of Living In Oblivion is hysterical :excited: i will have to rent that one...
