Loved him in Conspiracy Theory.

Not jazz, but I guess some of the stuff in this thread isn't jazz either:

Oh come on.

Because those music videos are being uploaded by Youtube users without the authorization of the copyright owners.
Different kind of music video, I guess, because I didn't really think anyone cared enough to take down Solomon and Weissenberg and Arrau clips. But, yeah, it happened for some reason.
-
I'm thinking of archiving some of those Youtube clips myself, I have a sneaking suspicion that many of the music videos won't be around much longer.
Why?

Harris' solo on the title track is Quite Possibly The Worst Solo I've Ever Heard.

Well, anyone that thought MilesDavis' renditions of ariceffron were funny isn't allowed an opinion.
[...] and then some dirty 'party' records which werent that dirty and werent that funny.
Deep.

I am also a fan of Rachmaninoff. Rachmaninoff is proof that you don't have to make music "of your time" to make great music for all time.
Although I am not a huge fan of Horowitz in general, this recording of the third piano concerto has a special place in my heart. In fact, Rachmaninoff apparently composed it with Horowitz in mind. Really moving.
No offense to your heart, but you gotta get the Reiner version over this one.
Every now and then we used to sing some Rachmaninoff in high school / college. I always loved his very bottom heavy arrangements for voice. And obviously his abilities as a pianist as well.
Where to start as far as CDs are concerned? I have nothing, but I think I would lean more towards choral and solo piano.
Thanks!
For solo piano, try the Etudes-tableaux; probably can't go wrong with Ashkenazy here.

in keeping with some changes i've been trying to make in my personal life, i'm not going to pay any attention to him this time 'round. thank goodness for the board's ignore function.
'Brian, I know I don't speak up much, and it's really hard for me to talk about my feelings, but—'
'Why don't we start with someone more interesting? Peter?'

Anyone have recommendations for The Wooden Prince?
i enjoyed this one!
I still haven't bought anything yet. I was leaning towards the Fischer and the Boulezes but then I saw that there's a cheap Bartók Dorati boxed set including it. Anyone know what the box is like? (I have the Menuhin violin concerto from it already—it's good.)

If you use decent CD-R media, you'll be fine.
The problem is to find "decent" CD-Rs. I have had problems with dozens of Fuji CD-Rs burned in 2002-2003 that have become partly unreadable by now. At the time, I thought Fuji was a renowned brand that offered decent CD-Rs
Same story here with Sonys.

I saw a programme entitled Legends of Jazz listed for tonight on PBS with the info 'Footage from Eric Dolphy's 1964 tour with the Misha Mengelberg Trio'. 'Hell yeah,' I thought. I'd forgotten this article: TV Review | 'Legends of Jazz With Ramsey Lewis'. It turns out I'm watching the Terry / Hargrove / Botti installment.
I have no idea how they could have got the info so heartbreakingly wrong. Does such Dolphy footage even exist?

Plus, these labels are so unfixed. I had a guy write me last night and tell me how much he liked the "smooth jazz" that I was playing and that the guitar was really lovely - I was playing Wes.There are some Smooth Jazz albums that fit rather better into the tradition of Soul Jazz than others. Try Urban Knights for that - of course, Ramsey Lewis does make a dfference. In general, Smooth Jazz suffers from exactly the same defects as Smooth Soul - some talented musicians and singers, but not much soul, not much conviction, no real story to tell. They probably wouldn't be ALLOWED by their labels to tell their story anyway.Must've been Bumpin'.

I do tend to think that people who complain about how bad a particular category of music is just aren't finding the good stuff - it's like listening to a smooth jazz station and than complaining that there's no more good jazz - you just have to know where to look for it, and it's not always easy to find, especially if you're an outsider to the kind of people who make that music -
Doesn't that mean there's good smooth jazz?

Well, it was a rhetorical question intended to show that saying that particular categories of music have good stuff just hides the aesthetic judgement in the choice of category. (With reference to AllenLowe's example: if he doesn't think any smooth jazz is good the argument now hinges on the placing of smooth jazz in the jazz category.)

I want my very own doorman. I will name him George and I will hug him and squeeze him and pat him and pet him...
-
"I had one young guy who moved from a fancy condo doorman building in California where he had a very cheery doorman," said Hy Rosen, a senior vice president at Bellmarc Realty. "He wanted a building without a doorman, and his biggest reason seemed to be he didn't want to have to say hello to someone twice a day."
How do you think doormen feel having to be nice to so many self-involved assholes every day?
So it's a win-win situation.
