Thanks for the info. Will check out Starcross Bridge.

I really enjoyed the 3-CD Turtle reissue of Marching Song. Purchased Catania a few months later. Just recently ordered The Cortege, but it hasn't arrived yet.

"The Cortège" indeed another must-have :)

My first live experience of the Westbrook Universe in 1996 near my home town: "Off Abbey Road" :tup

Both of those are excellent too. Mike’s site was offering the Hat CD of Rossini (Swiss radio version I think) a while ago for £5, which was a bargain. Both the live version of the Rossini and the radio version are great.

I have ‘On Duke’s Birthday’ on a 2LP set and that is very good too.

Calling resident Westbrook experts Chris-T and Jazzscriven for further pointers....:)

    Good move !

This recent archival 2CD release also captures some fine performances in excellent sound and with a good cross-section of his and Kate’s work, including stuff from ‘Citadel’.

    Hiya Bob & all,

Sorry for being late to the party, I haven't been to this forum for a year (terrible workload on the job).

Mike and Kate have posted weekly videos over the past year on therir own website. All are still avaible online. I'm sure you have noticed those and found out what you like.

My favourite among Mike's three solo albums is "Starcross Bridge".

I also recommend Mike's early album LIVE (re-issued on CD a couple of years ago as "LIVE 1972")

The reissue is on Spotify now too. ‘Glowing’ would make a good alternative theme tune for ‘Test Match Special’ (Britishism alert - apologies everyone else).

Last time I saw Harry Beckett he was with Chris  Biscoe. Good memories.

Gotta love sports that involve a tea break. - I can't make head or tail of the score tables though.

    Mystery maybe solved..

Bandcamp has a comment ‘remastered from the original tapes’ so sounds like Harry’s Mrs didn’t destroy them and they found them. Remastered by Gearbox - I’m in !

Listening right now - beautifully relaxed, just what I needed.

Got myself a couple of Chris  Biscoe's too while I was about it.

  5. Thanks for the heads up, Bob. Great that you were able to catch that.

This morning's trawl of the web came up with two new morsels of info:

There will be a radio broadcast on NDR Info on 15th September (22:05 German time) about Westbrook/Rossini/possibly NDR BigBand
    https://www.ndr.de/info/sendungen/jazz/Jazz-vom-9-15-September-2019,programmseptember216.html
(not sure if it will stream abroad)

Also a photo of good-looking Kate & Mike preparing Kate's September solo show of her paintings in London:

  6. LAST NIGHT AT THE OLD PLACE is the first thing I'll get when I'm back home later this week.

Another three albums due this year:
GRANITE - on 27th July (strictly speaking it's Kate Westbrook's album;  got mine at the live premiere on 21st June)
STARCROSS BRIDGE - due in July, new Solo album by Mike Westbrook, on the hatology label
CATANIA - 2CD, recordings from the famous 1992 Sicily tour, due in September on the ENJA label

  7. 1987 Chicago Jazz Festival (Open Air)

What I remember most was the noise made by the "audience" in the park. Most people had brought picnics and were interested in their own talk rather than the music.

It was also the night when the Globe Unity Orchstra played their last gig (except for a reunion 2002 in Aachen/Germany*). I remember enjoying that one very much.
