  1. I also like this one : Wycliffe Gordon Quintet - Dig This - Criss Cross with Seamus Blake, Peter Bernstein, Sam Yahel and Bill Stewart
  2. Brownie, Thanks for sharing this with us. Too bad there were no English subtitles.
  3. Seconded. I may have boring, pedestrian hard-bop tastes but this is the indispensible Herbie-on-BN for me. DItto. I am with Dan and Dave, "Takin' Off" is my favorite.
  4. Durium, You frequently post about CDs I would like to get. The problem is finding them at a good internet source here in the USA. Would appreciate it if you might share any good sources to find the CDs.
  5. K-Man's Crew from the Joe Locke/David Hazeltine Quartet CD titled Mutual Admiration Society.
  6. The Fresh Sound CD Burnin' also mentions those names (Harris-Austin-Gant) for the Sonny Stitt date, and so does the Bruyninckx discography; however, the latter notes that "Barry Harris is said not to be present at the above session, so probably the other musicians are also uncertain." Just found a note I put inside the booklet of my CD copy of this session. It indicates that according to the late Jack Tracey, who was the producer of this Stitt recording, the sidemen are Ramsey lewis, Eldee young, and Red Holt.
  7. mjzee - thanks for posting that highly interesting discussion with Ruth, Rudy, Michael and Dan. R.I.P. Ruth
  8. Lewis Nash seems to be everywhere. Wonder how many recordings he has made thus far? I have seen him live a number of times in a variety of contexts. He is definitely one of my very favorite drummers on the scene today.
  9. Yes, it's a good one. Bought it on LP when it was first issued on Atlantic. Now have the Discovery CD.
  10. Here are some (there are many others too) of the sessions not previously mentioned that have Barry Harris as a sideman that I like very much. I have given the labels on my CDs.Some were originally on LP on other labels. Dave Pike Quartet - It's Time For Pike - Riverside Sal Nistico - Heavyweights - Milestone Charles McPherson - Con Alma - Prestige Illinois Jacquet - Bottoms Up - Prestige Jimmy Heath - Picture Of Heath - Prevue Howard McGhee - Jazz Brothers - Storyville Howard McGhee - Home Run - Storyville Clifford Jordan - Repitition - Soul Note Buck Hill - Capital Hill - Muse Buck Hill - Tyhe Buck Stops here - Muse Ralph Lalama 0 Feelin' And Dealin' - Criss cross Steve Grossman - Do It - Dreyfus Lee Konitz - Lullaby of Birdland - Candid Dan Faulk Quartet - Focusing In - Criss Cross Dave Glasser - Dreams Askew, Dreams Anew - Artemis Al Cohn & Barry Harris, Vol.1- No Problem - Xanadu Al Cohn & Barry Harris, Vol.2- Play It Now - Xanadu
  11. I have "Perk Up", "Jazz Gunn" and "Boss Sounds". I like all three. But my favorite of the 3 CDs is "Boss Sounds". To my ears it has a bit more grit, and swings harder.
  12. Glad to hear the rumor was false. My favorite playing by Jack Sheldon is on the wonderful Curtis Counce albums on Contemporary.
  13. Svend Asmussen is a player worth hearing if you enjoy jazz violin. These three are very tasty. Svend Asmussen - June Night - Signature Svend Asmussen - Prize Winners - Music mecca (w. Kenny Drew, NHOP, Ed Thigpen) John Lewis & Svend Asmussen - European Encounter I almost forgot this one. Duke Ellington - Jazz Violin Session - Wounded Bird with Grappelli, Ray Nance, Svend Asmussen
  14. What do you think of the two Black Lion CDs with Barney Kessel? Kessel seems a strong enough voice to me. I have heard one of them and didn't find it as appealing as the others I listed. I do have and very much like the session with Gary Burton mentioned by others here. I also have this one which is interesting for the comparison of 4 leading jazz violin players. Violin Summit - MPS with Smith/Grappelli/Svend Asmusen/ and Ponty.
  15. My attitude about Grappelli depends a great deal on the other players on the recording. Here are some CDs of his that I like. Meets Earl Hines - Black Lion Parisian Thoroughfare (with Roland Hanna, George Mraz, Mel Lewis) - Black Lion & Michel Petrucciani - Dreyfus & Stuff Smith - Stuff And Steff - Gitanes & McCoy Tyner - One On One - Milestone & Martial Solal - Happy Reunion - Owl & Stuff Smith - Violins No End - Pablo & Hank Jones - London Meeting - String
  16. Along with his own recordings on Criss Cross, the Mike Melitto CD, and the Peter Leitch session, I also have John Swana as a sideman on these CDs. Benny Golson - Remembering Clifford brown - Milestone These are all on Criss Cross Eric Alexander - New York Calling Presenting Chris Potter Introducing Jimmy Greene Eric Alexander - Full Range Joel Weiskopf - New beginnings Joe Magnarelli - New York-Philly Junction As the above indicates, I very much enjoy the playing of trumpet player John Swana.

  21. Duke Jordan Trio - Lover Man on Steeplechase
  22. How Deep Is The Ocean - Dave Cliff Duo with Geoff Simpkins on alto sax and Cliff on Guitar from CD - Dave Cliff Duo & Quartet - Sipping At Bells on Spotlite
  23. Have a very Happy Birthday Phil.
  24. Ray was a marvelous jazz piano player. I had the opportunity to get to know him a bit as he was a very close friend of the late John Norris who was one of my very best friends. His many recordings for labels such as Prestige, EmArcy, Atlantic, Pablo and a number of others are very special.
