Madman, The World's Snazziest Superhero!!!

Miles' opening salvo on "Selim", and pretty much the whole LIVE EVIL album.

My wife works at a local fish market and is privy to some of the freshest salmon in town. Nothing better than letting it soak in a garlic ginger marinade and grilling it over mesquite.
-
Deep down inside, weren't we all afraid of this (or something like it)?
-
Aaah, gotta love the Stooges, AC/DC, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Motorhead. Rock is best when it's dumb.

Alright, I feel like I'm stepping into it here, but here it goes:
There's a rule of science that says once you take something out of it's natural setting in order to study it, the nature of what you are studying changes. I feel that this was true for jazz, and I feel that it will happen to "turntablism" if it is taken out of the clubs and put into the classroom.
I realize that prior to jazz study programs many top jazz players were involved in music programs, but the emphasis there was on learning music, and it was up to the players themselves to apply what they learned to playing jazz. IMO, if they HAD been taking jazz classes instead of music classes, they would have ended up in different places, even if the goals were the same.
-
Yeah, but honing your craft in front of an audience and honing it in front of a master are going to give you two different results. IMHO, once people began to learn more jazz in school than in the nightclubs and bars, jazz began to lose some of it's fire.

Hey, I've been gone all weekend. Miss anything?
-
Well, looks like the card's taking another ding. Thanks for the suggestions!

'Good Omens' by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. Anything by Terry Pratchett.
Also Douglas Adams' 'Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy' books.
All of these are the Monty Python school of dry humor.

Thanks for the link!!
Just got done with the first article and am looking forward to reading the rest.
-
So how was it?
-
Thanks for the suggestions. But seeing as how I just dropped more than I should have for a pair of speakers, I was hoping to find something a little cheaper.
So how much sound quality am I going to sacrifice if I wanted to spend under $200? mp3 playback is not an issue, nor is SACD.

I'm finally getting around to getting a DVD player, but need to know my options. I'm pretty much an amateur in the audiophile area, so what do I need to make sure my CDs still sound nice? or should I keep my old Denon CD player handy?
-
Hell yeah. I'm always sceptical when a band reforms after such a long hiatus, but their last album was a pleasent surprise. They still sound fresh.

This morning:
The Band-Stage Fright
New Breed Records comp-Fat Jazzy Grooves (trip-hop & beats)
The Stax Story disc 2
Pere Ubu-the Modern Dance
Fela-Everything Scatter/Noise for Vendor Mouth
My coworkers requested something other than jazz today. But there's always tommorrow.

Video for sale on eBay, along with a few vinyl reissues of 'Lick My Decals Off Baby' (worth getting a turntable for if you're waiting to find it on CD).

Twenty+ minutes of the same drum track drives me a bit batty. Although it seems to be growing on me the more I play it.

Aebi is one of those singers people can't be ambivalent about. Personally, her singing is one of my favorite parts of the Vespers release, and I can't wait to hear this one.
-
Listened to that one this morning. Probably the reason my thoughts were drifting in this direction. Also read a great interview with Zoot Horn Rollo here:
Have to agree on Clear Spot. I know it's not typical Beefheart, but I think I listen to that one more than any other one I have (including Trout Mask or Lick My Decals...).
-
Got it. thanks for the help.

Anybody remember Wonder Woman? Am I nuts or does the refrain in the theme sound awfully close to part of Cole Porter's "Love For Sale"?
-
Seen plenty of Zappa threads around, but like Beatles vs Stones, Motown vs Stax, or Miles vs Miles, these two seem to be forever linked. Any others out there with me on the Beefheart preference?
Favorite albums?
Life-changing experience?

Found this box set at the library and LOVE it. Only problem is that the liner notes are missing, so all I'm left with is the song titles. I'm curious about the albums covered and or the players involved. Any help? None at the Mosaic or BN site (that I can find).
Name some Blue Note cds you find overrated

Okay, my confession. I don't really dig Wayne Shorter's "Speak No Evil". I enjoy some of the tunes on it, but don't care for Hubbard's playing on it. Can't help but wish Lee was blowing instead (might as well admit I don't really care for a lot of Hubbard's playing anyway. Not my place to say he's overrated, just preference I guess).
