  1. Well, you ARE good, Jim! It IS Nat Perrilliat on the tenor saxophone solo. It is not Ellis Marsalis on piano. It is not Ed Blackwell or James Black on drums. But it IS Allen Toussaint, from the time of his early RCA days but not on RCA! You hit a massive grand slam home run with that guess! Digging deeper into the liner notes of my Bear Family CD release from 1992, I see that actually this track was recorded in 1959 and never released at all, until the Bear Family release in 1992. Allen Toussaint recorded a number of tracks for RCA in 1958, then went on to the Seville label in 1959. Our Track #1 comes from the 1959 Seville sessions. There were several singles released from 1960--1963 from these 1959 Seville sessions. But our Track #1 was not one of them. Since other members expressed an interest in knowing about this track, such as The Magnificent Goldberg, I will give a full identification of it now: Allen Toussaint, from The Complete 'Tousan' Sessions, (recorded 1958 for RCA and 1959 for Seville). Released on CD by Bear Family, BCD 15641 AH. You Didn't Know, Did You (composed by Allen Toussaint) Allen Toussaint--piano, Nat Perrilliat--tenor saxophone (solo), Alvin "Red" Tyler--baritone saxophone, Melvin Lastie-cornet, Justin Adams-guitar, Frank Fields-bass, Charles "Hungry" Williams-drums. Charles "Hungry" Williams was one of the most active and prominent New Orleans drummers of the era, adding a lot to many New Orleans R&B classics. I think that possibly this was not one of his better recorded moments. He could swing, and play different rhythms. He may have just not felt this jazz groove, I don't know.
  2. It is a New Orleans thing. I am not sure that the musicians intended it to be crazy. I have already stated in response to other members' guesses that the song was released in the 1960s. It was recorded in the late 1950s and released later.
  3. No, wrong continent.
  4. Track #1 comes from a different place than what you are thinking about.
  5. As I have stated in a new topic, we now have enough Blindfold Test presenters to fill up 2016. Thanks so much all of those who volunteered for this year! With our new volunteers, here is our presenter list for the rest of 2016: March Hot Ptah April Dan Gould May homefromtheforest June mjzee July Thom Keith August Joe September The Magnificent Goldberg October JSngry November clifford_thornton December felser
  6. Thanks to several members who came forward and volunteered to present a BFT in 2016, we now have a full list of presenters for the rest of the year. Thanks so much to those who came forward. Here is the list of presenters for the rest of the year. March Hot Ptah April Dan Gould May homefromtheforest June mjzee July Thom Keith August Joe September The Magnificent Goldberg October JSngry November clifford_thornton December felser So we are all set for the rest of 2016. Thank you so much, homefromtheforest, mjzee, Joe, The Magnificent Goldberg, JSngry and clifford_thornton, for stepping forward in the past several days. I can't wait to hear your Blindfold Tests! Also many thanks to Dan Gold, Thom Keith and felser, who had volunteered to present a BFT much earlier.
  7. Oh yes! I definitely agree with that! Now we just need a song title and album identification from the vast Gilmore discography.
  8. I agree that the Kamasi track does not sound quite like something from the 1970s. I feel dense, but I do not know what you mean by "As for Gilmore, hey, voices, right?"
  9. Yes! Track 13 is Song 1 on Disc 1 (of 3) from Kamasi Washington's 2015 album, "The Epic." The name of the song is "Change of the Guard". We have a thread about this album in the Jazz in Print section of the board.
  10. It is John Gilmore, yes indeed.
  11. Great, I will send you a Private Message about scheduling it
  12. What does everyone find unlike able or unlistenable in a Blindfold Test?
  13. I think your African and Caribbean tracks are great. I think if the music is fun and immediately compelling, the obscurity does not matter so much. Something I wonder-despite our elevated levels of taste, it seems to me that fun, soulful, swinging and immediately compelling tracks go over well on Blindfold Tests. Slow, ponderous explorations into quiet, dissonant textures, without immediately discernible melodic or rhythmic content, which go on for more than seven minutes, do not seem to be as well received. At least that is my theory. What does everyone think!
  14. I think Track 1 is hot too!
  15. Thanks Joe! I will send you a private message to get you scheduled!
  16. Thanks for the input. I think that we have all had varied reactions to the music on the BFTs. I know that some of it is immediately compelling to me, some of it is instantly forgettable, and some is intriguing and I want to learn more. I still feel a sense of adventure about the BFTs. paul secor, that is quite a compliment that Jeffcrom has given you.
  17. Very true. I know that I am as motivated as ever with the BFT. I can't wait to hear the new sounds that I will be introduced to, each month. paul secor, I think that you would put together a particularly interesting Blindfold Test. Would you do one for us? I will send you a Private Message today about a test later in the year. Your BFTs are a special treat as you introduce us to areas of music we would never hear otherwise. And your Blindfold Tests are fun! There is nothing wrong with having some fun with this! i know what you mean about playing around with the tracks. When I put a BFT together I think of it as an album, with a sequence and a flow. At least I try to achieve that!
  18. Jeff, that is interesting to me that you are burned out on the BFT and do not want to participate because you presented a particularly excellent BFT just a few months ago. Would you elaborate (either here or in a Private Message to me, a current administrator) as to what caused you to stop wanting to participate? It could be valuable information going forward. Thank you. I will send you a Private Message tomorrow. Thank you. I will send you a Private Message tomorrow.
  19. Oh, now I see. That makes more sense. I thought it would have been unexpected if you did not want to hear a good avant garde track!
  20. Thanks Jim. We would love to have you as a presenter. Your BFTs are always a treat. Please let me know which month you would like, when things become more clear for you. I am curious, as I genuinely do not understand this.. What did you mean by "I don't like to get 'free tunes.'" Did you mean that you prefer not to have avant garde recordings on the BFTs. or did you mean something else?
  21. I like the concept. However, I have noticed that with the BFTs in the last year, the presenter will post the link to the BFT on the first of the month. Often there are then several comments from the first to the fifth of the month, and again on the 28th to the 31st of the month, with no comments in between the fifth to the 28th. So we do not have a steady stream of participation all month long.
  22. I think that we may have gone off on a slight tangent about the length of the BFT. As you say, the reasons for participation may be more varied than that. The question remains, should we continue to have the BFT? If so, we need presenters to step forward for 2016. That is where the rubber meets the road. Whatever we may think or feel about the BFT, if we do not get more presenters, it is all academic. There will be no BFT in several months of 2016 without some presenters.
  23. Actually it has been common for the BFTs to run between 80 to 100 minutes in length, and we have had several which were two CDs long in the past few years. I have played the BFTs on CD-Rs in my car over the past many years, and they often do not fit onto a single CD. .
  24. I wondered about your last point. I have gone back and read over some of the early BFTs. The preparation and mailing of a physical CD-R to every member who participated was the sole way to share the tests. More members commented on each and every track back then. I wonder if the downloads, and now the streaming, makes a difference in overall participation.
