  1. That Kenny Clarke with Andy and the Bey Sisters session is not listed in the Lord...

Never heard of it and one I have never seen :(

That is one of the rarest french EPs : one example known. The owner is Alain Antonietto. I have just done a copy for me... :P:tup

The recording is not very good, anyway Clarke, Michelot, Simmons, Gaudry, Bacsik, ... what a line-up ! :)

  2. Now "KENNY CLARKE WITH ANDY AND THE BEY SISTERS"

    EP Métropole [FR] 46001

    Paris – ?December 1959 – released ?1970s

Eric Dixon (fl), Elek Bacsik (vn, gt), Art Simmons (pn), Pierre Michelot (sb), Kenny Clarke (dm), Humberto [Canto Morales] (bongos and/or conga), Andy [bey] and the Bey Sisters (vc)

Side A - Caravan, Part 1, 2 - Bacsik [as Al Back] plays (vn) only

Side B - Begin the Beguine, Parts 1, 2 – Bacsik [as Alexis Backsix] plays (gt) only

Is this vinyl in the Lord discography ?

  3. "Quentin Jackson" recorded february 1960 in Paris (Ducretet Thomson).

    w. Quentin Jackson (tb, voc), Clark Terry (tp), Art Simmons (p), Elek Bacsik (g), Michel Gaudry (b) & Kenny Clarke (dm).

Found this rare item a few months ago.

BirdandDizzy, for your information, Bacsik remains in background through the whole session!

Yeah, I just love this album. Bacsik his really great on the background and very good harmony with the piano.

There is also other recording with the same personnel (you also found the EP) :

"Art Simmons" and his orchestra, recorded 9 november 1959 for Ducretet Thomson

    w. Clark Terry, Eric Dixon (fl, sax), Art Simmons (p), Elek Bacsik (g), Michel Gaudry (b), Kenny Clarke (dm) and Billie Poole (voc).

So sad, Billie died this year in May.

My friend Art Simmons is proud of this album and that's one of the few albums where you can hear -even in a bigger band- the trio of the Mars Club...

(--Art, if you read this message...!--)

  4. I half-heartedly went to the Austin Record Show this weekend for about an hour with a friend. Didn't really dig around that much, but just happened upon an old 45 on the Dawn label by Lou Bennet (the great but very under-recorded organist). Since this was something he recorded in the states before leaving for Europe, I picked it up.

Great record. One one side is the song "Googa Mooga" credited to L. Bennet. It's the same "Googa Mooga" that is on Freddie Roach's "Mo Greens Please" Blue Note LP. Very interesting to hear Lou with a real american rhythm section in his prime.

I've just found the same disc on eBay !

  5. Damn. Busted.

Thanks for your kindness :( !!
    I think Chaney said "Busted"

cause you now know (from the link)

    that he really isn't 18.

    Now, for my being 17...:w

    Of course :D

"Le jazz c'est une musique de jeunes qui veulent rester vieux."

"Jazz is a music of young people who want to stay old." (yes in that order)

    [Pardon my English ;) ]

-> that's also my favorite album of the "Blue Stars" vocal group !

  6. Jean-Claude Fohrenbach - Fohrenbach French Sound

    personnal details for CD2 :

    JC F. "Sexfide" [06-09]

Roger Guérin, Bernard Vitet : trumpet, bugle

    JC Fohrenbach : tenor sax

    Pierre Cullaz : guitar

    Bibi Rovère : double bass

    Jean-Louis Viale : drums

    JC F. & Géo Daly [10]

JC F. = tenor sax, organ

    Géo Daly = vibraphone

Jacques B. Hess : double bass

    Franco Manzecchi : drums

    Bonus track [14]

    Ivan Jullien : trumpet

    Marc Steckar : trombone

    JC F. : tenor sax

poss. Jean Vasse : double bass

    Claude Vaillant : drums

Really interesting tenor sax and talented arranger, he is "an eternally marginal figure in the French jazz landscape" (Alain Tercinet).

Early 1952, France discovered West Coast musicians like Getz, Warne Marsh, and Jimmy Giuffre. JC Fohrenbach said : "Aha! At last, guys who play like me!"

  7. There's another double CD coming out as part of the Jazz In Paris series! A reissue of rare albums from the neglected French tenor saxophonist Jean-Claude Fohrenbach:

    Fohrenbach French Sound

The link does not provide informations on who's playing in. The Lord has no personnel listed except for four sides with the Georges Arvanitas Trio (Jacky Samson on bass, Charles Saudrais on drums)

There are extracts on the Fnac website : click here

This album seems to be in stores since november ? Will verify today!

    Have a nice day!

  8. Hello everybody,

I'm desperate to find information about the English jazz guitarist Terry Donoughue. He was married with the English actress Bertice Reading.

I really appreciate how he played on 3 French albums :

    * Art Simmons - "Piano aux Champs-Elysées" (Art Simmons (p), Terry Donoughue (g), Bill Crow (b), Dave Bailey (d)). Recorded in 1956 in Paris.

LP 10" BAM (Boîte à Musique) reissued on CD in the collection "Jazz in Paris" (Universal), you can listen extracts of this album on Amazon.com.

    -> This album on Amazon.com

    * Aaron Bridgers - "Music For Dreaming" (Aaron Bridgers (p), Terry Donoughue (g) & Herbert Marchl (b)). Recorded in Paris, 2nd half of the 1950s.

-> Exists only on LP 12" GEM (Guilde Européenne du microsillon).

    * Art Simmons with Terry Donoughue, Bertice Reading (voc) and others.

    LP 10" BAM (Boîte à Musique) ?-1956

My friend Art Simmons would love to talk to Terry Donoughue.

Maurice Summerfield, specialist of jazz guitar, who is English, can't help.

Please contact me if you can help.

    Thank you

  10. Steven,

Can you give any details (personnel, date, location) regarding the live recording which was released on LP on the Europa Jazz label (LP # 1047)? The only info I have, which I'm unsure about, is that it was from 1966, and George Arvanitas was on piano. The song titles are: one note samba, on green dolphin street, summertime

    Thanks

    Jim,

On Summertime it is not Bacsik, it is the Coco Briaval Trio

    Coco Briaval on www.djangostation.com

One note Samba and On Green Dolphin Street :

Regarding to the archives of the INA (Radio and Television french archives) Samba de uma nota so was broadcasted in 'Jazz sur scène' the 14 august 1966 on the channel Paris Inter. The recording (of the concert?) was the 8 August 1966. About the musicians the INA only gives Georges Arvanitas on piano. I wanted to send him the recording of the concert but he died 2-3 months ago. But we could suppose Jacky Samson (b) and Charles Saudrais (dms). Nothing about the location, ?-salle Wagram.

    Best

    Steven
